　2004年、「Start From The Dark」で遂に復活したヨーロッパ。これに合わせて発売された２枚組Very Best盤が本作だ。代表曲をCD ２枚に亘ってたっぷり収録しているのは勿論だが、今まで長いこと入手不能だったレア曲が幾つも収録されているのが特徴だ。「1982-1992」を持っている人でもこのVery Best盤は手に入れる価値がある、と言わせてもらおう。

　レア音源の中でも最強なのが CD2: Tr7.「Seven Doors Hotel '86」だ。このトラックを知っている人は相当のハード・ロック・マニアだと言える。シングル「Rock The Night」のB面に収録されていたこのヴァージョンは、1986年にスタジオ再録音されたもの。1st.アルバム「幻想交響詩」（1983年）収録のオリジナルよりも当然音質が良く、ジョーイの歌も力みがなくなってスムーズになっている。
　日本のファンにとって、この「Seven Doors Hotel」という曲は特別な意味を持っている。まだメジャーになっていなかったヨーロッパを世界で最初に認めたのがこの日本であり、日本でこの曲がシングル・ヒットになったのがきっかけで、ヨーロッパはスターへの階段を登り始めたのだ。感動のレア音源復活である。

　他に、CD1: Tr6.「Sweet Love Child」 と、CD2: Tr4.「Long Time Coming」 が同様にシングル・オンリーの音源である。また、「Prisoners In Paradise」期のセッションから CD1: Tr8、CD2: Tr5 が収録されている他、日本盤のみのボーナスとして2曲 CD1: Tr17.「Ninja(live)」、CD2: Tr17.「On The Loose(live)」が収録されている。

　但し、これでもレア音源は完全でない。大事なトラックが抜けている。それは、「The Final Countdown (Single version)」だ。3'47" の短縮ヴァージョンで、ダダダン ダダダン…といきなりドラムから入るアレンジのもの。600万枚以上売れたシングル曲が、どうして今だに入手不可能なんだろうね（笑）？

旧作から近作まで、バランスよく選曲されている。
特筆すべきはDisc1-8で、素晴らしいバラードである。
なぜこの曲が Prisoners in Paradise アルバムから漏れたか
解らないが、もし最終的にミックスダウンされ収録されていたら
大ヒットチューンになっていただろう。ジョーイのヴォーカルは
勿論、ジョンのエモーショナルなソロも秀逸だ。

アルバムを通して聴くと、ジョーイのヴォーカルは旧作のテイクでは
荒っぽく、表現力に欠けるが、近作のテイクを聴くと、
ヴォーカリストとしての技量が著しく向上したのがよく判る。
つくづく素晴らしい楽曲を世に送り出してきたのだなぁと痛感
させられる作品だ。
