カナダ・ケベック州・モントリオールで
結成された7人組インディロックバンド。

初期トーキングヘッズ、デビッド・ボウイを
彷彿とさせる、つんのめるヴォーカルで
ニューウェーブっぽい楽曲を
オーケストラルに奏でる個性的なサウンド。

FLAMING LIPS meets INTERPOLという
表現もされるほど
疾走感のあるギター・サウンドと
バイオリンなどのオーケストラル・サウンドが
リズミカルに共鳴する。

多様な楽器を駆使しながらも
基本となるサウンドはシンプルなため
勢いのある若さと疾走する情熱を感じさせ
それでいてクールにまとめ上げるところに
音楽的センスを感じる。

レコーディング中に家族に不幸が続いたことから
「葬式」と名付けられたデビューアルバム。

身近で起こった出来事を元とする
シニカルな歌詞を綴る心の叫び。

オーケストラルな響きは
どこか寂しげで
突き放すようなヴォーカルは
レクイエムのようだ。

サウンド面の新鮮さだけでなく
てらいなく、自分たちを晒してみせる
バンドの姿勢にこそ
期待のニューカマーとして欧米で人気を集める
要因があるような気がする。

ここ最近は自分の気性の上下が激しく、ちょっとしたことで絶望したり、感嘆したりする。今日、久し振りにこのアルバムを聴いた。一曲目で全身が震えて泣いてしまった。独特の高揚、盛り上がりが凄い。楽器の使い方も不可思議で、「ペットサウンズ」のように最初はよく良さが（Wake up以外は）わからなかったのだけれど、今回ようやく、アルバム全曲からなす協和音に感服した次第。

前回聴いたのは、友人が事故で亡くなったという知らせを受ける直前。墓場のちかくを通っていた時、「葬式」をテーマとしたこのアルバムをたまたま聞いていて、死とは虚無的な終末なんかじゃないだと感動していた矢先の、この死の知らせであった。僕は混乱し、しばらく聞くのをやめたのだった。

U2でもヨシュア・トゥリーなどのアルバムで、全身で感動するというような経験をしたことがあるのだけれど、彼らはデビューアルバムでそれを成してしまった。言葉はそのとき歌詞を読んでなかったため正確にはわからないのだけれど、でも、よく能を観た外国人が感動したように、彼らの魂の叫びに、その時の不安定な心に突き刺さって、感極まった。

そして二度目、「Wake Up」である。同じアルバムで二度泣くなどという経験は、初めてだった。

「ヨシュア・トゥリー」と並ぶ、ロック史の名盤である。

NYCのインディーシーンが盛り上がっている中、あまり注目はされていませんがカナダ出身のいいインディーバンドも最近たくさん出てきています。その中で私が最も好きなバンド、The Arcade Fire。日本での知名度はまだまだゼロといったところに近いですがサマソニへの出演もすでに決定していてこれから知名度は伸びていくでしょう。アルバムですが、独特なボーカルの声、どのバンドにも比較しづらく、さらに英語とフランス語で歌っていたりとかなり個性の強いバンドです。特に＃2、＃4、＃9がオススメ。
