5.0 out of 5 stars 一気に噴出した１９６６年、魔法のアルバムの中の一枚。, 2006/8/30
曖昧な定義のコンセプトアルバムであるかどうかはともかく、ある統一した概念から意識的に作られたアルバムであることは確かだ。
それはアルバムタイトルの「face to face」（対峙する）からも想像される。

当時「sunny afternoon」の大ヒットにより、同傾向の嘲りに満ちたアルバムとなった。

今で言う出会い系サイトのようなものを強烈に皮肉った曲。
ハワイに旅行に行ったが、素直に楽しめないイギリス人の話。
家出娘を嘆く歌。
立派な家を建てたのはいいが、借金ですぐ手放さなければならなくなった男の話。
あちこち行って大変ねと、スタジオ・ミュージシャンに捧げる歌。
考え事が多すぎて、何も考えられない人の歌。
等々、全曲一筋縄でいかないひねくれた歌ばかり。

サウンドはthe beatlesの「rubber soul」のようになシンプルであるが、味わい深い。
「Rosie wont'you please come home」「too much on my mind」等、優れたメロディの曲も多い。

おまけの七曲がまた良い曲ばかり。
某ｃｍでオンエアされた「I'm not like everybody else」や「dead　end street」が入っている。

初期キンクスの傑作のひとつです。
この作品にのめり込んだきっかけは、物語調の歌詞でメローなナンバーの２「ロージー、家にこないかい」
を聞いてからで、最初はこの曲だけを何度も繰り返し聞いていました。
また、８の「ワイキキの休暇」は、ハワイアン風にかき鳴らすギターの中で、レイの皮肉った歌詞が炸裂してます。
すごくお薦めです。
他にもハーマンズ・ハーミッツに提供した３、不朽の名作１３「サニー・アフタヌーン」等と充実した内容になっています。
余談ですが、キンクスを買う時の注意として輸入版より対訳のついた国内版の購入をお薦めします。
歌詞の意味が解からなければキンクスの魅力が半減する曲もありますので。

ジョン・レノンの最高傑作『ジョンの魂』がそうであったように、この作品もキンクスのレイ・デイヴィスのうらみつらみが作り出した名作といえるだろう。ただし『ジョンの魂』とはうらみの質が少しばかり違うのがミソ。R・ストーンズのように丼勘定になれないレイ・デイヴィスはパイ・レコードの社員食堂のババアの指がオレの月見うどんの汁に入っていて腹が立つんだといった市井に根付いた怒りでもって本作を完成させたむきがある。その怒りの性質は思いっきり個なセコイものかもしれないが、それゆえに我々庶民には身につまされるものがある。
