「アン・アメリカン・バンド」や「エンドレス・ハーモニー」にも既に使われているシーンもあるが、同じような画でもカットが違ったり、他のＤＶＤにはないシーンなどがあり、ブライアン・カムバック当時の資料映像としはファンにはうれしいＤＶＤ可である。1976年という映像の古さもあり、ビーチ・ボーイズの歌を聴く・見るというより、貴重な資料を見る、という１枚だ。

昨今では、生き残ったメンバーの中でも、ブライアンの活躍が抜きん出ている感があるが、６０年代後半からのセミ・リタイア状態を知るものからすると、感慨深いものがある。本作のように、他のメンバーがライヴ活動を主軸にしてバンド存続を図っていた時代の映像を見ると複雑な心境だ。

７６年といえば、本人意思を無視した周囲の打算が引き起こした「ブライアン・イズ・バック」キャンペーンが吹き荒れていた頃。アメリカ建国２００年の祝賀ムードと相まって、ビーチ・ボーイズも息を吹き返していた時代だ。そういう時代背景を通して改めて本作を見ると、事実として彼らがアメリカの光と影を体現する、まさにアメリカン・バンドであることを痛感する。

ブライアンの状態は完全ではないので、ここでの見せ場は、ショーマンシップ満点のマイク・ラヴのフロントマンぶり、そしてカールやデニスの在りし日の雄姿、これに尽きる。バック・ミュージシャンのサポートも素晴らしく、これはこれで彼らの歴史の中でも十分出来として評価できる演奏だと思う。

間に挿入されるコメントなども含め、改めて彼らの歴史を学んでみて欲しい。そういう意味では入門編というよりコアなファン向けか。
