   キース・エマーソン、グレッグ・レイク、カール・パーマーによる、イギリスのプログレッシヴ・ロックバンドである。シンセサイザーを駆使し、アーティスティックな作品を成立させる。
   ムソルグスキー作曲のクラシックに基づいた作品が、70年のデビュー当初からレパートリーの1つであった。しかし幾度となくブートレッグで出回ってしまったため、72年、あえてライヴテイクによる本作をリリースした。大胆な解釈のもと、計算ずくのアレンジと演奏が試みられており、彼らの醍醐味が十二分に味わえる。ヒットシングル<12>も収録されている。（春野丸緒）

原曲がクラッシックのアレンジなので、取っ付き難そうなイメージがありますが、1度聴き出すと最後まで聴いてしまう事が多いアルバムです。ムーグ・シンセサイザーが意外に活躍していたり、グレック・レイクのレイク節も聴けます。（キング・クリムゾン時代のような歌い方の部分もあるが・・・）　ELPとしては初期の作品で、まだ線の細い部分も感じられますが完成度は高く、今聴き直してみても、以降の作品に多大に影響を与えていた作品であると思います。　「クラシックのアレンジもの」としてでは無く、「ELP」のアルバムとして聴くと意外に楽しめる「傑作」ライブアルバムです。（異色ではありますが・・・）

当時のロックアルバムの中で、ライブアルバムといえば、この作品とディープパープルの「ライブ・イン・ジャパン」が双璧でしょう。それぞれ志向の違ったファン層に支えられていたバンドですが、ライブの躍動感をストレートに伝えているという意味で、共通点を感じます。どちらのバンドもスタジオ向けのアレンジよりも、演奏に重きをおいていたという点も、相通じるところです。
それにしても、映像効果を駆使した今時のステージに比べて、音だけで勝負というのは何と素朴なことか。３０年を経た今でも聴き応えを感じるのは、そんな素朴な情熱に支えられているからでしょうか。

ロックファン相手にえせクラシックを披露するのは反則だと思うがまぁEL&Pだから許せるかな。これを聞いてその気になって退屈なクラシックのオリジナルを買っちゃった人(私)もいるのでは？EL&Pのこういったクラシックのカヴァー？作品はこれだけなのでよかった。やっぱりEL&Pはオリジナルの方が全然カッコイイです。このアルバムはマニア向き。
