７０年発表の１ｓｔ。元ナイスのキース・エマーソンと元クリムゾンのグレック・レイク、元アトミック・ルースターのカール・パーマーの３人で結成。クリムゾンのツアーで前座がナイスだった縁で２人が新グループを企て、カールを加えたという経緯だったそうだ。このグループは無骨で大道芸的なおもしろさをライヴで発揮するが、実際のスタジオ作ではかなりシリアスなものが多く、また違った意味で魅力が高い。本作はデビュー作ではあるものの、実力派のグループ出身のメンバーが集まっているだけに既に何ら文句を付ける部分はないものの、これから新しい音楽を創造するんだ！！という意気込みのようなフレッシュさが魅力的だ。プログレ界の鍵盤奏者としてはリック・ウェイクマンと人気を二分しており、攻撃的かつ、トリッキーなプレイでは右に出る者のいないエマーソンのプレイと神々しいグレックの歌声、そしてやたらとオカズの多いバタバタとしたドラムス。この個性的な３人が作り上げた音楽は７０年代の数多くの名作の中でも非常に魅力的だ。“この人 (キース) より上手い人はジャズのミュージシャンなら一杯いる”という話を腐るほど見てきたが、裏を返せば毎回そのようなことを言われるほどキースのピアノはロック的に上手い。少なくともサディスティックな力強さという意味ではダントツで素晴しいし、存在感と言う意味においても唯一無二だと思う。彼はオルガン、ピアノ、シンセとどれを弾いても個性的だが、本作での魅力は何と言ってもその力強いピアノである。楽曲も現代音楽的な響きを持ちつつも、非常に分かりやすいものが多く、何よりもメロディアスである。マイナーなアーティストの凡作を聞くよりは、まずは本作のような良作を押さえることが寛容だと言いたい。パイプ・オルガンや初期のムーグ・シンセの音色にも酔いしれられる。

キーボード・ロックというジャンルの頂点に君臨し、圧倒的な輝きを今も失わないグループの１つに Emerson, Lake & Palmer の名を挙げることについて、異論を挟む余地はないでしょう。本作は、そんな彼らの発表したデビュー・アルバム（！）にして、キーボード・ロックのあらゆるエッセンス／面白味が詰め込まれた超傑作です。

彼らの代表作としては、そのクオリティの高さゆえ、どうしても『タルカス』〜『恐怖の頭脳改革』までのいずれかの作品が挙げられることが多いようですが、 ELPを語る上では本作の存在は欠かすことのできないものです。

多面的なELPサウンドの中でも最も重要かつ魅力的な部分である、はち切れんばかりにエネルギッシュなプレイ、そしてクラシックを取り入れたへヴィなナンバーといった特徴もあちらこちらで見られますが、本作において特に注目すべきなのは、代表作 Take A Pebble に見られるような、ミステリアスにしてロマンティックな叙情性でしょう。グレッグ・レイクの瑞々しい感性がアルバム全体の雰囲気に溶かし込まされており、作品を激しさとたおやかさのバランスが適度に取れた完成度の高いものへと仕上ているのです。

正統的な技巧に裏打ちされたハイテンションなプレイと、ハードな面とリリカルな面を併せ持つ素晴らしい楽曲群が一体となったプログレッシヴ・ロックの傑作。ELPの他の作品を気に入った方へはもちろんのこと、あらゆる種類のキーボード・ファンに強くお薦めしたい大名盤です。

若干傾向が違います。というのも次作「Tarkus」以降、ハモンドとシンセによるハードロックといった感じのバンドになっていくＥＬＰですが、このアルバムでは各メンバーの前身バンドであるナイス、クリムゾン等の影響が感じられます。
個人的にＥＬＰのNo.１曲であるTake a Peddleのような作風は次作以降には見られなくなります。しかし、BarbarianやKnife Edgeなどは次作以降の作品のモチーフとなっていますし、Lucky Manはレイクの弾き語り曲の定番となっていきます。
次作以降あまりに有名作が多いため、ついつい忘れられがちな本作ですが、キングクリムゾンを好きな人や次作以降の有名作を全て聴き終えてしまった人は是非とも本作を聴いてみて下さい。

個性の強い３人が出会って演奏を合わてみたら、これって凄く新しいのでは、という希望に満ちあふれた喜びの作品。怒濤の2作目、タルカスに続く。
