ジャニス・ジョプリンと言えば大ヒットアルバム「パール」が有名だけど、このアルバムが発売された時のロック・ファンの驚きは今でも語り伝えられている。「サマータイム」は数多くの歌手、特にジャズ歌手が好んで歌う歌だが、情感といい、歌詞に込められた言葉の解釈といい、まちがいなく、ジャンルを越えてジャニスのこれが最高だろう。いつ聴いても涙がこぼれる。バックの演奏もいい。（松本敏之）

数あるロックの名曲の中でライブでタイムスリップして聞きたいのは、ジャニスのサマータイムだけだ。60年代後半、うらぶれた酒場やマイナーなライブハウスの一角で、ジャニスは歌うというより下半身を振り絞り、この曲に浮き世離れした息吹を与えてしまった。もしあの時代のジャニスを目のあたりにしていたら、まっとうな人生を送れたかどうか疑問だ。間奏でのファズがかったアドリブは、一気に私を逝かせてくれる!
