Orrin Keepnews のプロデュースにより、1985年に録音されたクロノス・カルテットの「弦楽エヴァンス」が24bit・リマスタリングされて"SAVOY JAZZ"レーベルから再発売された。

クロノス・カルテットは純粋に現代音楽を演奏する弦楽四重奏団だが、ロックやジャズ、民族音楽などを素材にした音楽をもレパートリーに加え、そのバラエティに富んだ音楽性は幅広い層に支持されている。

このアルバムは、彼らがエヴァンスの代表曲を採譜し、アレンジし演奏しているもので、ゲストとしてベースのエディ・ゴメスとギターのジム・ホールがそれぞれ３曲ずつ参加し、JAZZのフレーバーを加味している。

聴きなれた旋律が室内楽としてよみがえる「Waltz For Debby」、原曲の美しさが更に輝く「Time Rememberd」、ジム・ホールのギターが神秘的なハーモニーを奏でる「Turn Out The Stars」、バイオリンのハイ・ノートが胸を締めつけ心を揺さぶる「Peace Piece」など、JAZZを即興音楽という観点とはまた異なる視点から眺めることができるが、なんといっても弦楽器がなぞるエヴァンス・メロディーの素晴らしさには、しばし言葉を失う。

エヴァンス・ファンには是非是非、絶対に聴いて頂きたい一枚！

ヒップな弦楽四重奏団クロノス・カルテットによるビル・エバンス作品集（85年録音）。
84年のセロニアス・モンク集「Monk Suite」と同じくオリン・キープニュースがプロ
デュースを担当している。こちらでもエヴァンスゆかりのゲストとして1、2、3にエデ
ィ・ゴメスが、6、7、8にはジム・ホールが参加している。クロノスとゴメスの共演は
で特に音色の点での不協和を心配したが想像していたよりもスムーズで特に違和感はな
い。むしろゴメスが参加することでリズムにメリハリが付きジャズ的な感覚を取り入れ
ることに成功している。一方ジム・ホールとの相性はギターのトーンがやや生の弦楽に
溶け込めていない点が気になるもののあのUndercurrentでビルのピアノとのインター
プレイを弦楽四重奏と見事に再現しており美しい。

ジャズをクラシックの視点から捉えたアルバム。

エヴァンスにゆかりのあるエディ・ゴメス(b)とジム・ホール(g)をゲストに迎えた形での演奏。

Nardisがなかなか良い。
出だしから引き込まれる。

しかしながらエディ・ゴメスの電気的な音色が苦手な自分にとってはロン・カーターあたりにやってもらいたかった。

加えてアレンジが悪く伴奏が単調である点が評価を下げている。
Kronos Quartet自身がアレンジをしているわけではないらしい。

バイオリンのソロではボリューム不足で埋もれてしまっている感じがある。

とはいえなかなか面白いコンセプトのアルバム。
おなじみのWaltz for Debbyなども収録されているのでビル・エヴァンスの曲を良く知っている人なら楽しめるとおもう。
