<ストーリー>
ニューヨークでベテラン刑事が麻薬の売人を射殺する事件が起きた。当の刑事はあくまで正当防衛だと主張するが、正義感に燃えて調査にあたる地方検事補は、やがてその事件に疑惑を抱きはじめる……。

ＮＹ検事局を舞台に新米検事補（ティモシー・ハットン）が大抜擢を受けて担当させられた事件は、政界にうって出ようとしている上司を頂点に仕組まれた茶番だった。気付いた時にはすでにはもはや身動きの取れない泥沼にずっぽりはまっていた。１９９０年の作品。
ＮＹ検事局を舞台に新米検事補が正義を貫く理想に夢破れるストーリーは、この作品と全く同じシドニー・ルメット監督脚本でこの作品の７年後１９９７年にアンディ・ガルシアでまさに「ＮＹ検事局」という題で再登場する。シドニー・ルメットはこの筋書きに相当執着心があるとお見受けする。お気に入りなのだろう。
「ＮＹ検事局」とあきらかに異なる点は、２点ある。１点は主人公ティモシー・ハットンと恋人の間に胸をつかれるようなな人種問題が絡まっていることだ。２点目はニック・ノルティという凄みのあるデカの存在感が実にいい味を出している事。

従って同じテーマの２作品を比べ、ストーリーの緻密さ重厚さから迷うことなくこちらの作品に軍配を上げたい。

5.0 out of 5 stars 掘り出し物。ニック･ノルティの悪党」刑事振りが大迫力, 2005/1/22
この映画は日本未公開か。プロットとキャスティング、監督で買ってみました。息の詰まるようなリアリティ溢れた展開。麻薬、賄賂、ゲイ、マフィア、犯罪の役どころは揃っている。捜査側もどこまでがクリーンなのか。「NY検事局」の元になった作品とは知りませんでした。とにかく、ニック･ノルティ演じる警部補の悪党ぶりが怖いくらい。彼も元はといえば、上司にはめられ、悪の泥沼からは出でられぬまま犯行を重ねていく。なにしろ、次の検事総長を狙おうというのがトップなのだから、ニックは殺され、多くの犠牲者を出して事件は終結するが、真実は闇に葬られる。ニック･ノルティが好演。ティモシー･ハットンもそれなりに、ただ、存在感でニック･ノルティに圧倒されている。、映画はヘビーで暗い。しかし、これはなかなかいい映画です。日本で上映された記憶がありません。いずれにしろ、安い。ダメもとで買ったが、掘り出し物でした。
