'７０年発表、デビューアルバムです。
ミック・ボックスの強い左手首を生かした、切れ味抜群で安定感のあるギターソロが割と多めに聴けてとても好きです。
この後のアルバム以降、徐々にキーボードのケン・ヘンズレーが主導権を握るにつれて存在感が薄れてしまう感じがしますが、好きなギターリストの一人です。
ミック・ボックスのギターは３連符を多用したワンパターンのフレーズが多いですが、音の切れに抜群の持ち味があり、また演奏に安定感があるので、かなりの練習量を積んだように感じます。
アメリカン・ハードロックの、エネルギーを外に放出して爆発させるサウンドではなく、エネルギーを内側へ取り込んで凝縮させるブリティッシュ・ハードロックのサウンドを、サバス、パープルなどと共に築いた、とても重要なバンドだと思います。

オリジナル・アルバムは全８曲だったでしょうか？以後ボーナスが付いて１１曲入りで発売された事はありましたが、何とこのCDは＋８曲の全１６曲入りです。でもボーナス・トラックと言うと、つまらない曲が入っている事も少なくありませんが、これは『大当たり！』です。オリジナル部分についてはあえて書きませんが、代表曲『Gypsy』の３バージョンが楽しめる素敵なアルバムです。まずボーナス部分９曲目の「Bird Of Prey [US Album Version]」ですが何と次のアルバム『Salisbury』の曲ですが、こちらはリマスターされていないようなドラムスが”ドッタン バッタン”(^^; と聴き比べてみると面白いです。１０曲目と１４曲目も同じ曲なのかなぁ？？と言う程内容は違います。１１曲目の「Come Away Melinda [Previously Ureleased Version]」はオリジナルは眠いんですが、こちらはクリアー！１３曲目の「Wake Up (Set Your Sights)」もこちらは”目がさめます”そして何と言っても最後の「Gypsy [BBC Session - Live]」は『Live January 1973』のようにひたすら長~くなくて”必聴”のバージョンです。また忘れてはいけないのが”写真多数の充実したカラー・ブックレット”が入っている事です。最後に‥最新の「Sanctuary」盤は写真の”箱”に入っていない？ようなのですが（ハッキリしません、間違っていたらすみません。）こちら「Castle」盤は写真の箱付きで、中に例の”クモの巣顔！”CDが入っているので嬉しいです。ブックレットはどちらのメーカーさんも同じ感じなのですがどうでしょう…？
