『オール・アイ・ガット』に続く2年ぶりのアルバム。お馴染みのスタンダード・ナンバーを中心に、彼の味わい深いヴォーカルが堪能できる。プロデュースはトミー・リピューマが担当。

よく、「声色を使い分ける」と言う。これだけではあまりいい響きはしないが、これをしないことには声優が務まらない。アル・ジャロウは男性歌手の中で、その道のいちばんの達人に見える。ライヴでは時に、物真似芸人がよく客席に向かって「お爺ちゃん、私がやってんだよ」とやる場面にそっくりなこともある。が、アルの原動力になるのは、「あらゆるものを総動員しない限り、歌の魂に手が届かない」という誠意だけで、そこに人を小馬鹿にするような姿勢は微塵もない。ジャズのスタンダード曲を軸にしたこの最新作でも、その意志を貫きながら、またまた新たな創作の踊り場に飛び込んだ。凄いもの、凄いことだ。上下どの音域からもスムーズに発進し、魔法のようなシフト・チェンジを連続。曲調、曲想に応じて自分のスウィート・スポットを見つける視力は“3.0”超だろう。名匠トミー・リピューマと20年ぶりに再会して伴奏陣も全取っ替え。声色でなく人を使い分ける手際も冴えた傑作になった。 (成田正) --- 2004年08月号

これは痛快!　「ジャロウ」以来のいわゆるブラック・コンテンポラリー路線は、ポップス度の向上と広いリスナーへのアピールを通じ、グラミー賞授賞式の常連となるなど商業的にも名実とも超一流のスーパースターとなったわけだが、今回のシンプルでアコースティック中心の楽器構成による多重録音に頼らないジャズ/リズム・アンド・ブルースへの回帰は大歓迎である。「グロウ（輝き）」や、もっと以前にピアノ・トリオだけをバックに歌った「ザ・マスカレード・イズ・オーバー」の時代にタイムスリップしたかの爽快さ、しかも、故ドン・グロルニック作でデビッド・サンボーンの好演が印象的であった懐かしのフュージョン曲「Lotus」を含むが、全編がジャズ・スタンダードである。彼はこれまでもジャンルにとらわれず幅広く歌ってきたが、そのルーツは紛れもないジャズ・シンガーであり続けてきた。それは折に触れて歌ってきた「スペイン」、「ティーチ・ミー・トゥナイト」「ブルー・ロンド・ア・ラ・ターク」、「ブルー・イン・グリーン」等が示している。前作「オール・アイ・ガット」や前々作「トゥモロウ・トゥデイ」も都会的で良かったが、本作はそれらが意図していたビジョンとは異なる方向性を目指している。いつになく豊富なスキャットを含む卓越した歌唱力が余す所なく披瀝され、彼の原点を見つめ直すことのできる、とにかく文句なしの骨太の1枚である。
