朝比奈4度目のブラームス交響曲全集である。1番は実演で聞いた。その時は伊藤恵と組んだピアノ協奏曲1番が白熱した名演奏でより記憶に残ったが、こうして録音で聞いてみると、メインの1番も引き締まったフォルムの見事な演奏であったことがわかる。そう、「引き締まった」というのが本全集の大きな特徴である。いささか間延びがちであった大フィルとの旧全集より、テンポが速く、アンサンブルも緊密だ。それは、2番のコーダにも現れている。大フィル盤と同じくテンポをあおるが、大フィルが朝比奈の指揮棒についていけず、縦の線が完全にずれているのに比べ、新日本フィルは乱れそうで乱れない。3番はロマン性よりも、クラシカルな端正さを感じさせる。4番も力感に溢れている。「フルトヴェングラーさんの真似をするといろいろ問題があるが、クレンペラーならよいのではないかと思ってね」と朝比奈はコメントしていたように記憶しているが、なるほどうなずける演奏になっている。録音は秀逸。知・情・意が見事に一致した素晴らしい全集の完成だ。同じ新日本フィルとのベートーヴェン交響曲全集とならんで、世界に冠たる大全集の登場である。普段朝比奈を「アバウト」な指揮者だと思っている人は、これを聞いて考えを改めていただきたい。

朝比奈隆は音大を出て指揮者になった訳ではない。大学オケ出身の自分としてはそういった部分でも共感・憧れを持ってしまう。このブラームス、生演奏だからこその熱さが存分に伝わるCDだと思います。音楽が好きだ！そんな気持ちが全面に出ているような感じでしょうか。特にオススメはベタではありますが交響曲第１番の第４楽章、そして第３番の第３楽章。弦楽器の重厚感、これぞブラームス！っていうのがひしひし伝わる演奏です。ただ、自分が演奏する際のサンプルとしては（こんな演奏がしたい！と思う分にはいいですが）、ライブ録音だけに何箇所が聴こえにくい音・パートがあり、そういった意図にはそぐわないかも知れません。

私は、ブルックナーの有名な「聖フロリアン」での第７のライブから聴き始めたのだが、正直言って、幻滅した。まずオーケストラコントロールが出来ていない。金管奏者は、プロの資格が無い程下手である。本当にリハーサルをやっているのか？と疑ってしまう醜い録音でした。指揮者たるもの、譜面を読んで自分なりの解釈でオーケストラを引っ張る必要があるのだが、「フルヴェンの真似は、（うんぬん）」の発言は、自分は指揮者ではないと告白するに等しい。決して口にしてはならない言葉である。老齢のため、呆けてしまったのか？朝比奈氏のブルックナーは幾つも聴いてきましたが、残念ながら、終生、名演奏ができなかったのは、恥ずかしい限りです。もっと頑張ってスコアを良く読んで（指揮者たるもの、他の指揮者の録音を参考にする事は、タブーである事は世界の常識）勉強しなければ、名演奏は残せません。口にするのも汚らわしい。
