ロンドンに行った西武男ならぬはみ出し刑事。派手なアクションで結構楽しめる。マックQよりもこなれている感じ。

生粋のアメリカ人ジョン・ウェインとイギリス紳士（時にハメを外すが）のリチャード・アッテンボローのコントラストを描いた脚本や演技、そして監督が秀逸。決してワンパターンにならずに、スリルとサスペンスが楽しめる。1975年の作品だが、今見てもドキドキハラハラする展開。ブラニガン警部補はコルト・パイソンを、殺し屋はなんとモーゼルM712を使用していて、貴重なフルオート射撃シーンが見られるのもこの映画ならでは。

アメリカ・シカゴの重鎮刑事ジョン・ウェインが長年追っていた暗黒街の大物ジョン・バーノンを起訴まで持ち込むが、イギリスのロンドンに逃亡される。ぶちキレた?彼は逃亡先のロンドンに向かう。だが、そこには数々の困難と、彼を消そうと企むジョン・バーノンが雇った恐るべき殺し屋がジョン・ウェインを狙っていた!。という例によって例の如く?の相変わらずの図式通りの展開である、(警察官映画)ポリス・アクションの1つで、ジョン・ウェインの暴走ぶりに振り回されるスコットランドヤードのイギリス紳士である、リチャード・アッテンボローとの漫才的やりとりの趣向も定石通りで、お話も食指を示す程のものでもなく新鮮味不足で物足りない。しかし、何しろ一番の見所はジョン・ウェインの壮快な大暴れが何よりのお楽しみであり、幾分、安直さが目立ちありきたりではあるが、それなりのアクションの見せ場や愉快な描写も用意されており、監督のダグラス・ヒコックスはジョン・ウェインの勇ましい、いぶし銀の個性を最大限に引き出そうと懸命に努力しているのも大いに伺える。この手の映画にはお決まり?の大爆走のカー・チェイスや骨身惜しまない銃撃戦等の、派手なアクションが連続する。殺し屋との直接対決の場面も直線的=具体的に描かれているので、大変スカッとした気分になりました。私個人としましてはジョン・ウェインと言えばやはり「西部劇大スター」のイメージが定着化しておりますので、窮屈?で、ぎこちない背広姿には苦笑させられます(笑)。老いを感じさせない立派な大活躍を見せてくれるジョン・ウェインの魅力が散りばめられた大痛快ポリス・アクションであります!。
