なんといっても一曲目のタイトル曲「Still Crazy After All These Years」が最高に良い。せつない歌詞もさることながら、一流スタジオミュージシャンによるバックの」演奏もキラリと光っている。また、「I Do It for Your Love」や、巧みに韻を踏んだ「50 Ways to Leave Your Lover」もサイモンの代表曲の中のひとつ。

最近はあまり評価されていないように見受けられるポールサイモンだが、ビートルズと並ぶ偉大な功績を残す、優れた才能の持ち主だと思う。

　ソロになってからのポールは、「ひとりごと」「グレイスランド」など、様々な民族音楽を大胆に取り込み、自身の血肉にした上で、アルバムごとに大胆に表現してきた。まさにワールドミュージックの先駆者たるべき輝かしい歴史があり、きらびやかなサウンド・プロダクションこそ得意としてきたアーチストである。

　しかしながら今作は、ニューヨーカーとしての資質が前面に出た、都会に住む者の視点から紡がれた、モノクロームな10編の短編小説といった趣のアルバムに仕上がっている。前作「ひとりごと」が原色の色鮮やかなポップアートだとすれば、今作はモノクロの芸術写真に例えられるだろう。腕利きのミュージシャン達が奏でる、極端に音数を減らしたシンプルな演奏が心地良く、ちょっと洒脱なジャズ・バーかどこかで、グラス片手に生演奏を聴いているかのようか感覚が味わえる。モノトーンだが決して地味ではない、渋く深〜いアルバム。グラミーのアルバム・オブ・ジ・イヤーなのも頷ける、秀逸な作品だ。

　久々のＳ＆Ｇ名義となった（2）「My Little Town」も、話題性とは関係なく、ほろ苦い感傷がヒリヒリと残る作品であり、このアルバムのテーマにマッチしている。Ｍ・ブレッカーのサックスが冴えるジャージーなタイトルトラック（1）、Ｓ・ガッドのドラムパターンも斬新な全米ＮＯ１ヒット（4）、Ｐ・スノウとの絶品のデュエット（6）をはじめ、カラフルな前作からガラリと趣を変えながらも、アーチストとしての絶頂期にあった今作も、駄作・捨曲の一切無い完璧なアルバムだ。

　ポールの代表作でありながら、彼の歴史の中ではこの路線の作品は他になく（近いのは「Heart And Bones」くらいか？）、ある意味では異色作かもしれないが、これも星5つ以外はありえないアルバム。

このアルバムは、サイモンにグラミー賞をもたらした。しかも、このアルバムに収録の“50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”はビルボード・チャートの１位に輝いた。誰もが認める名盤である。前２作で様々な音楽ジャンルに挑んだサイモンは、このアルバムに取り組む前にジャズの作曲法をあらためて一から学んだという。その結果出来上がったのが、ニューヨーカーらしいセンスにあふれたこのアルバムである。サウンド的にはやはりジャズ/フュージョン系の色が濃い。歌詞も、タイトル曲や前述の“50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”、“I Do It for Your Love”など、洒落た映画の一場面か短編小説を思わせる味わい深いものが多い。

タイトル曲と“50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”はサイモンのベスト盤には不可欠の有名曲。“Have a Good Time”もしばしばベスト盤に含まれる。“Gone at Last”はいかにもゴスペルという曲で、今回ボーナス・トラックとして加えられたアレンジの異なるデモ・ヴァージョンも聴きもの。“My Little Town”ではアート・ガーファンクルと共演しているが、これはもともと、ソロになってから甘ったるい歌ばかり歌っていたガーファンクルに向けて、なまくらと化した彼を刺激して以前の若々しさや鋭さを取り戻させようとサイモンが作った、詩的センスと鋭敏な知性を盛り込んだ辛口の歌。そして、なぜかサイモンのベスト盤に含まれることはないが隠れた名曲と言えるのが、“I Do It for Your Love”だ。トゥーツ・シールマンズのハーモニカが聴けるこの曲は、ビル・エヴァンズが_Affinity_というアルバムでそのシールマンズとの共演でカヴァーし、その後もライヴで演奏し続ける愛奏曲となった作品である。最近では、ハービー・ハンコックの_Possibilities_というアルバムで、サイモン自身が共演しさらにジャズっぽいアレンジで歌ってもいる。ジャズ・ミュージシャンからこれだけ評価されればサイモンも本望だろう。（そういえば、タイトル曲もブラッド・メルドー・トリオによってカヴァーされている。）
