4年ぶりとなったベン・フォールズのソロ・セカンドアルバムでは、
主にアコースティックなピアノマンとしての側面がフィーチャーされています。
BF5セカンド~サードで残した課題も練り直されて、
クドさの抜けた尻上がりタイプな楽曲群は、聴いていて飽きが来ません。
進化したベンの底力が一曲一曲にみなぎった良作になっています。

お約束系のLANDED/YOU TO THANK等はもちろん、以前なら今一つサマにならなかった
JESUSLAND/TIMEといった系統の曲もシェイプアップされ、
じっくり聴ける仕上がりなのが嬉しいです。（バンドスタイルで作った成果かも）
地味に驚いたのがSENTIMENTAL GUYのサビ。かつてないピアノの自然体っぷりや
語りっぷりがベンのピアノマンとしての新境地をうかがわせます。

　彼もジャック・ジョンソン同様、今まで個人的にイマイチだったのに極端にはまってしまいました。やっとBen Folds Five時代のアルバムを聴き始めましたが、やはり今作の素晴らしさはずば抜けています。

　何と言うか、シンガーソングライターとして一皮も二皮も剥けた感じなんです。立ちながらガンガン鍵盤を叩いている曲はほぼ無く、ピアノ・ベース・ドラムの編成でじっくりとじわじわ聴かせてくれる曲が中心になっています。
　故に「単調」という声もあるようですが、そんなことは一切感じません。楽曲の一つ一つの深みや美しさが半端無く研ぎ澄まされていますし、彼のピアノに対するポテンシャルがまた一つ解放されたのでは、と思うほど鍵盤に魂が乗り移っています。

　特に、買おうと決めた2曲目"You To Thank"の連弾のもたらすテンションは圧巻ですし、娘のために歌った5曲目"Gracie"や7、11曲目と、旋律に表れる感情がとても豊かで前面に押し出ています。
　また「もう手遅れなんだよ」と、諦念に哀しみが覆う8曲目"Late"は、今は亡き孤高のシンガーソングライター、エリオット・スミスに捧げられています。私も彼の死を悼んだだけに本当に泣けます。

　そうなんです、今作のベンはまるでエリオット・スミスが乗り移ったかのような、切ない色彩を帯びている楽曲が多いんです。美しい声のハーモニーは彼の専売特許でしたが、3曲目"Jesusland"10曲目"Time"など、今作のベンも負けず劣らずのハーモニーを聴かせてくれ、それが曲の質を格段に上げています。　

　言い過ぎかもしれませんが、この作品がこんなに素晴らしいのは、もしかしたらこれがベン・フォールズとエリオット・スミスという、二人の天才のスピリチュアルなコラボレーションだからなのかもしれません。

やや煮詰まりを感じさせたベン・フォールズ・ファイヴの解散を経て聖作した前作「ロッキン・ザ・サバーブズ」は極めて爽快で、かつソロとして一人多重録音なども駆使した手作り感がひときわ魅力的だった。

以降、４年間の充実した活動を経て登場した本作、日本版初回盤のみシックなスリップケース入りで登場。

驚いたが、また元のギターレス・３ピース（ピアノ、ドラム、ベース）によるバンドによる録音形態になっている。が、音楽的に懐古したというよりは、サウンドに生き生きとした生命力を宿らせようとした感が強い。

楽曲も、ハチャメチャにロックするような雰囲気ではなく、詩にもメロディにも深みと個性が溢れていて、バンド時代、そして前作を経て、それを更に熟成させたかのような印象があえる。

やはりエリオット・スミスに捧げた「レイト」、愛嬢に捧げた「グレイス」あたりは涙腺さえ刺激してくる。こんなにヒューマンな感動と興奮を味あわせてくれる作品は昨今無かった。傑作だと思う。
