PMGとしてのデビュー作。代表曲の一つである（１）が早くも登場。
独特の爽やかな楽曲、ハイレヴェルな演奏、別ジャンルに対する進取の精神など、PMGについて語るべき根幹の要素がこの時点ですでにほぼ表れている。
特に（１）は今も聴く人間に旅への憧れを喚起させてやまない名曲。
パット本人は昔の曲に思い入れをしないことにしているそうな。これだけ素晴らしいデビューを飾っていても奢らず前しか見ないなんて真面目すぎ。凄い。

７８年発表のパットメセニーグループ名義でのファーストアルバムです。メンツは、ｋｅｙにライルメイズ、ｂにマークイーガン、ｄｒにダンゴッドリーブというツワモノ揃いです。サウンド的には、ＪＡＺＺロックといえばいいでしょうが、特筆すべきは、そのクリスタルのごとき透明感溢れるサウンド。暑い夏の夜や朝に聞くと、爽快感が高まること請け合いのサウンドです。また、メンバーも、決してプレイをひけらかすわけではありませんが、要所要所では、高度なプレイを披露してくれています。また、ライルメイズとの共作３曲を含め、有名なタイトル曲を初め全６曲とも、何れも佳曲揃いです。
暑い夏にふさわしいＪＡＺＺロックアルバムをお探しの方にぴったりのアルバムです。

ギタリストとしてのＰＭをゲイリーバートンのグループにいたときから注目していた人はかなり少ないでしょう。余程の古いファンでもこのアルバムか次の「アメリカンガレージ」でＰＭＧとして注目したのではないでしょうか。ついでに、メセニー・メイズのコンビは現在でも不動ですが、この時期のＢ：マークイーガン、ds：ダンゴットリーブのグループは、この2作だけのはずです。
ということで、このアルバムから入門した人たちにとっては、星５つでも足りないはずですが、あとからのＰＭＧファンの逆流（特にジャズファン）とすれば、☆☆☆☆ぐらいなのかな〜。
ただし、名曲のオンパレードですし、メセニー・メイズはもとより、ベースのマークイーガンがかなりよいと思われます。今買っても、古くは無いし、損することは絶対にありません。
竹村淳氏のライナーノーツも秀逸ですよ。
