　マックス・ローチは１９４０年代にパーカーをはじめとしたビ・バップの巨星たちと数多く共演し，モダン・ジャズ・ドラマーの第一人者になった。他の黒人ドラマーと比べてと言っては語弊があるが，正確かつクリーンなタッチのスタイルでテクニックも抜群。絶頂期だったバド・パウエルとの死闘とも言える共演が「バド・パウエルの芸術」や「アメイジングVOL.1」に残されており，ピアノ・トリオの傑作として又彼の初期の代表作として今も輝きを失っていない。
　１９５６年，クリフォード・ブラウンが交通事故のため世を去った。まだ２６才にも満たなかった彼を失ったことは，ジャズ界最大の痛恨事のひとつだが，短期間の活動にしては比較的多くの録音が残されており，せめてもの救いといえる。
　ローチとブラウンが双頭コンボを結成したのが１９５４年。本作は彼らの記念すべきデビュー・アルバムで，既にしてリーダー二人の魅力が結晶したすばらしい演奏の連続だ。この後発表された作品も全て傑作の名に値し，まったく稀有のバンドだったと今さらながら思う次第。
　私はジャズに疲れたときには，彼らの演奏に耳を傾けて元気を回復している。

マックス・ローチがライバルのアート・ブレイキーのクインテットでセンセーショナルなデビューを果たしたクリフォード・ブラウンをスカウトし、双頭コンボを結成したのはイースト・コーストシーンでも衝撃的な出来事であったに違いない。マイルス、モンクも活動を再開し、東海岸にもようやく黒人に元気が戻ってきた頃であったが、それでも依然として西海岸の景気のよさや白人のスタジオ・ミュージシャンの羽振りのよさに当惑気味な時期でもあったからだ。このアルバムはハード･バップ、モダン・バップの巻き返しを象徴するクールで熱いスタジオ録音である。ゴースト・オブ・ア・チャンス、ダーン・ザット・ドリームといったスタンダードナンバーも含まれ両者のコンビネーションはすでに高い完成度を示している。しかし、アルバム全体の構成では、この後リリースされたいくつかのアルバムには及ばず、ローチのドラムソロがやたら目立ったり、選曲の順序によるものかスムーズに聴きづらい面などがあったりするのがやや気になる。もちろんブラウンのソロはどれも素晴らしいのだが・・・。
　それでも、この後２年間の充実したコラボレイトの始まりであり、双頭コンボ結成の新鮮な息吹と喜びに満ちたプレイが随所に聴かれる重要な録音であることに変わりはない。人間的にも演奏者としても素晴らしい人物であったというブラウニーとリズムの哲学者マックス・ローチの輝かしい船出の記念すべきドキュメントである。
