   アルフレッド・ヒッチコックが久々に母国イギリスに戻って監督した作品で、先の数作のマスコミ評価が低く、演出の腕衰えたりとけなされがちだった彼が、一念発起したかのように鮮やかな映像の技巧を全編にちりばめ、そこから醸し出される緊迫感が心地よい快作に仕上げており、巨匠健在を世界中に知らしめた。ジャガイモと一緒に袋に詰められた死体のどこかグロテスクな雰囲気や、事件を追う警部の奥さんの作る奇妙な高級料理に事件を追う警部がへきえきしていたりといったユーモア、そしてイギリスならではの静かでうら寒い雰囲気など、至るところでヒッチコックならではの映像センスを堪能できる逸品である。（的田也寸志）

駄作続きだったヒッチコックが母国英国で撮った作品。

ハリウッドで撮った作品と違い、グレース・ケリーやケイリー・グランドといった華やかな美男、
美女は出てこないし、画面いっぱいに溢れていたアメリカ映画らしい豪華さもない。がしかし、
ネクタイで首を絞められた女性の死体が、テムズ川で発見されるシーンが
なかなか衝撃的。

そこから続くストーリーや映像は、ヒッチコックならではのもの。
監督自身かなり力を入れた作品ではないでしょうか？
飽きることなく最後まで観れました。
あまり期待していなかっただけに面白かったです。
