Ｓ＆Ｇ最後のアルバム_Bridge over Troubled Water_中の（おそらくロック/ポップス系ミュージシャンとしては初めて）レゲエを取り入れようとした“Why Don't You Write Me”では、当時まだ「レゲエ」があまり知られておらず、スタジオ・ミュージシャンたちが自分たち流にやってしまったため、失敗に終わった。そこで、この作品の“Mother and Child Reunion”という曲では、わざわざジャマイカに行って録音し、レゲエを取り入れたロック/ポップス系音楽として最初のヒット曲を生み出したのだ。

そのほかにも、フォルクローレを見事に取り入れた２曲目、陽気な６曲目などはサイモンの代表曲である。７曲目は、2006年のモントリオール・ジャズ・フェスティヴァルでサイモンの功績を讃えたトリビュート・コンサート（現在輸入盤で入手可能）が行われた際にエルヴィス・コステロが歌いアラン・トゥーサンがピアノを弾いた、独特の雰囲気を持つ曲。８、９曲目はメドレーのように続いて味のある演奏を聴かせる。９曲目は短いインストゥルメンタルの曲だが、ステファン・グラッペリのヴァイオリンとサイモンのアコースティック・ギターの掛け合いがなんとも言えず良い雰囲気だ。10曲目はステファン・グロスマンのボトルネック・ギターをフィーチャーしていて、サイモンの代表曲の一つである。今回のボーナス・トラックに入っているアレンジの異なるこの曲の未発表ヴァージョンも聴き物。

全体的に、サイモンのアコースティック・ギターと歌を中心にしたシンプルなサウンドだが、いわゆる「フォーク」というよりは、民族的な変わったリズムやジャズ的なフェイクが効いているアルバムで、ここで言及しなかった曲も含めアルバム全体が一つの雰囲気を持っていて、聴き出すとつい最後まで聴いてしまう。個人的にはサイモンの全アルバム中でもトップクラスの愛聴盤だ。

“明日に架ける橋”のあとの初めてのソロアルバム。１曲目がコテコテのレゲエというのも、これからはやりたいことをやるぞ！という意思表明をしてるみたいです。
　彼はこの後ず〜と兼高かおるさん？（古くてすみません）のように世界を旅してワールドミュージックを消化していくわけですが、その片鱗がすでに現れています。“明日に…”の“手紙がほしい”を“母と子の絆”で、“コンドルは飛んでいく”を“ダンカン”でと前作で消化不良だった部分をとことんやりきったという感じの曲が含まれています。
　全体的にギターとパーカッションに必要最低限のバックを添えたサウンドで、マイク近すぎない？ぐらいにポールのギターのリアルな音が堪能でき、聞けば聞くほど味が出るアルバムです。
　今回の紙ジャケット版は帯まで完全再現なのですが、ソニー流の上からはめ込み式帯にワーナーのマークはちょっと違和感があるかも。しかも価格が高めなのはそのデザイン版権の買取料なの？と思うぐらいです。総じてワーナーの紙ジャケシリーズは高めで、せっかくの過去の名盤を若い人に聞いてもらおうというよりもコレクター向けの設定なのかな？このあたりは、ソニーレコードの姿勢を見習ってほしいものです。

本作はＳ＆Ｇの活動に終止符を打った後、７２年１月にリリースされ、ポールのソロ活動の門出を飾った名作。彼の技が冴え渡るアコギを中心とした少ない編成での演奏とアートぬきでもソロでやっていけることを実証した彼の素晴らしいヴォーカル中心の落ち着いた曲、ジャズ風味の曲、それに泥臭い曲が多くを占めるが、後の彼の幾多の傑作アルバムに結実した様々なアイデアに満ちた、楽しい玉手箱のような作品だ。まだ誰も白人ミュージシャンがレゲェにチェレンジしていない時代にジャマイカでレゲェに取り組んだＭ１、南米音楽を彼のオリジナルの曲に採りいれたＭ２は、彼の当時のワールド・ミュージックに対するアンテナの感度が如何に鋭いものであったか物語る。その２曲とＭ６は後のライヴの快作「ライヴ・ライミン」で採り上げられたように、ポール・サイモンの代表曲。これら３曲のためだけでも本作は求める価値がある。Ｓ＆Ｇをリアル・タイムで体験できなかった私にとっては、ラジオで初めて聴いたヒット曲Ｍ１は特に新鮮だった。その鮮度はまだ落ちていないのが凄い。

ポール・ファンなら必須の上記３曲以外の曲も、味わい深いものばかり。Ｍ４ではロン・カーターが参加し、Ｍ９ではステファン・グラッペリとのデュエットで楽しいインストゥルメンタルを聴かせてくれるように、彼がジャズへの関心を示していることにも注目すべきだ。後の彼の「スティル・クレイジー〜」に代表される都会的でかつ落ち着いた雰囲気の傑作に至る路線の萌芽は本作で既に見て取れる。

最後に、ポールの発言を多く引用した解説が充実していますね。「母と子の絆」が中華料理店で出たチキンと卵の料理の名前に由来していたとは！
