   鯨に乗ってやってきたという伝説を信じるマオリ族の一家に生まれたパイケアだが、女として生まれた故に、跡取りとして祖父から認められない悲しみを抱えていた。ある日、大量の傷ついた鯨が浜に漂着する。
   パイケア役のヒューズの無垢な魅力がなんと言っても素晴らしい。女であることを悲しむ彼女の心境を代弁するかのように、海中の鯨たちが悲痛な声を上げる。女流監督ニキ・カーロの演出はシンプルかつストレート。一族の末裔たる祖父と、伝説に縛られるあまりバラバラになっていく家族の姿をもしっかりと描いている。清涼な魅力に満ちた、ミネラルウォーターのような傑作。（斉藤守彦）

ニュージーランドの先住民マオリ族の少女が、滅びゆく民族の伝統に縛られながらも、不思議な運命に立ち向かっていく感動ドラマ。マオリ族の長男・ポランギは、双子の男女を授かるが、喜びも束の間、母親と男の子は産後すぐに命を落としてしまう。

初めて観たニュージーランド映画で、マオリ族という未知の文化の話なのに、
何故かとても懐かしい。仮に日本のどこか海辺の村に置き換えリメイクしても
十分に成り立つ話である。祖父役など日本人役そのままでもいけるだろう。

最初のシーンで生まれてきた娘にその伝説の祖先の名を付けるところで、
そして跡継ぎの男子を待ち望んだ祖父の落胆を見たところで、この物語の
進行は予測できるのだが、それでも学芸会や鯨復活の場面では大いに泣ける。

老若男女が安心して一緒に楽しみ語らえるエコロジカルな美しい映画である。

スゴイ映画に出会った。
始まってすぐに、NZのチカラ、主演女優のチカラ、伝統と言うモノのチカラ・・・
映画自体にもとてもパワーを感じる、素晴らしい映画やと思う。

いっぺん観てみて。
最初から最後(また最後がやり過ぎずのくど過ぎず、ますます素晴らしい)まで圧倒されるよ!!

恵比寿ガーデンプレイスで観たのですが、本当におすすめです。

ストーリーといい、景観といい、心に残る一品です。
特に、ニュージーランドになにか思い入れのある人は必見です。マオリの伝統であったり、海を大切に思う心には同感のできる作品にしあがっていますP,S 主人公のケイシャ・キャッスル＝ヒューズがとてもいい演技をしています。歌声などは、臨場感があり最高に素敵な作品、かつ、本物のマオリ族に出会えます。
