    ハービー・ハンコックは、多彩な能力をもったミュージシャンだ。そのため、アルバムによって内容が一変する。1968年録音の本作は、新主流派の新人として期待が高まっていた時代の作品である。

   ピアノ・トリオを中心に据え、その背後にフリューゲルホーン、ベース・トロンボーン、アルト・フルートの3管アンサンブルを配している。これでトリオ演奏をより美しく引き立たせている、一種のコンセプト・アルバムだ。その意味でピアニストとしてはもちろん、アレンジャーとしても存分に能力を発揮した作品といえる。中低音を使ったハイブロウなホーン・アンサンブルは、どこかギル・エヴァンスに通じるテイストだ。ハービーは当時マイルス・ディヴィスのバンドに在籍していたので、マイルス経由でギルの手法をマスター、それを自己流に表現した成果が本作というわけだ。

   一流のミュージシャンが名を連ねているが、ソロをとるのはハービーだけ。曲は、ロン・カーターの1曲以外はすべてハービーのオリジナル。子どもの世界をテーマにしていることもあり、ピュアでロマンティックな作品だ。（市川正二）

美しくもミステリアスなホーンのアンサンブル、スインギーなベースとドラム、そしてリリカルなハンコックのピアノ。『スピークライクアチャイルド』、『ライオット』、『ラウンドトリップ』等の名曲を収録。ブルーノート時代のみならず、ハンコックの全キャリアを振り返っても、屈指の名盤といえます。

　金管が柔らかいアンサンブルを綴っているので何となくそちらに耳がいってしまうけれど、これはもう Hancock がちょっと気を利かせてそうした音飾りを付け加えてくれた、本当は極上のピアノトリオ・アルバム、と言いたくなるほど全編にわたって素晴らしい Hancock ピアノが大展開される。
　少しボッサの入った緩やかな [2] で聴かせるピアノの美しさは、夕方の黄昏から夜の濃紺に移っていくジャケット写真の魅力そのもの。アルバム全体に優しくメロディアスなのに、絶妙に抽象的なところが更にカッコいい。
　Thad Jones(flugelhorn)、Peter Phillips(base trombone)、Jerry Dodgion (flute)、Mickey Roker(ds)、Ron Carter(b)のクレジットによる68年作。ピアノだけがソロをとり金管は控えめに裏舞台にまわすセンスが光る。お薦めです！

このCDは、僕のお気に入りの１枚です。特に、タイトルの「スピーク・ライク・ア・チャイルド」は素晴らしい出来です。また、ジャケットも美しい。ジャケットの２人は、ハービー・ハンコックと恋人時代の妻です。この点からも、良い音楽だと言えます。
