   ジャズ・ファンにこんなことを説明するのはナンセンスかもしれないが、本作の舞台となっている「ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード」とは、本と雑貨が所狭しと並び、若者で賑わう「あのお店」のことではない。1935年にニューヨークにオープンし、40年代からジャズ・ジャイアンツたちの名演を聴かせ続けるナイト・クラブである。そんな名門「ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード」が初めてライヴ・レコーディングの場を提供したのが本作。と同時に、テナー･サックスの巨人ソニー・ロリンズが自分のコンボを率いて聴衆の前に姿を現し、彼にとって初となるライヴ・アルバムのレコーディングをおこなった作品でもある。57年3月に録音された本作は、テナー・サックス、ベース、ドラムというシンプルな編成ながら、迫力とスリルと熱気を充分に満喫できる分厚い演奏が繰り広げられる好盤。（高山武樹）

ジョン・コルトレーンとソニー・ロリンズはともに５０~６０年代を代表するテナーの巨人であり、異なった個性ゆえ何かと比較される事が多い。コルトレーンがどちらかというと未熟だった時期から段階的にステップ・アップして自己の音楽を究極まで高めていったのに対し、ロリンズは初期においてすでに天才的なアドリブの才能を披露し、時として停滞しながらも、カムバックしては飛躍的な素晴らしい演奏を聞かせる。努力型のトレーンと天才肌のロリンズといってしまえばそれまでだが、ロリンズにはケース・バイ・ケースにおいてとんでもない能力を発揮するつぼのようなものがあるようだ。このアルバムはピアノレスでシンプルな野性味に満ちているが、複合的リズムをたたき出すエルビン・ジョーンズの参加によって自然発生的なロリンズのソロはスリルに満ちている。オールド・デヴィル・ムーン、朝日のようにさわやかに、ストライヴァーズ・ロウと続くライブの緊張感はロリンズの即興者としての実力を遺憾なく感じることが出来る。

このアルバムでライブの凄さ、良さに引きづりこまれたのは
きっと私だけではないでしょう。
ジャケットのロリンズの顔の写真からしてこのアルバムは
際立っていてとにかく「早く聴け!俺の音を聴け!」と
押しまくられそうです。聴いてびっくりドラムの音、ベースの音
サックスの音がすばらしい音で降りかかってくる。ピアノレスで
甘さを抑えた辛口の素晴らしい出来。

ロリンズには珍しいピアノレストリオ。ピアノが入らないことで、ロリンズはかえってのびのび演奏している。「チュニジアの夜」「朝日のようにさわやかに」などの名曲は今聴いても新しい。当時、新鋭ドラマーだったエルビン・ジョーンズの演奏も素晴らしい。１９５７年のモノラル録音で、ニューヨークの有名ジャズクラブ「ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード」でのライヴだが、２４ビット盤なので音は抜群。これで１５００円はお買い得というもの。（松本敏之）
