   ジャズの人気盤としてはトップ・クラスにランクされる屈指の名盤。マイルス・バンド時代のキャノンボールは58~59年にかけて、『マイルストーンズ』『ポーギーとベス』『カインド・オブ・ブルー』といったマイルスの諸作に参加したが、本作はまさにそうした時代の録音。

   契約上の関係でキャノンボールのリーダー名義になっているが、実質上のリーダーはマイルスだったといわれる。確かにアルバムのハイライトはマイルスの絶妙なミュート・プレイが冴える<1>。この曲はジャズのレパートリーとしては間違いなくベスト3に入る人気曲だが、それもすべて本作におけるマイルスの名演ゆえ。だからこの1曲を聴くために買っても絶対に後悔はしないはず。

   リズム・セクションがハンク・ジョーンズ、サム・ジョーンズ、アート・ブレイキーといった腕達者ぞろいも魅力だ。「ジャズって難しそう」と思っている人がいたら、まずこのアルバムから聴くといい。もしこのアルバムを聴いてつまらないと感じたら、それはジャズとは縁がなかったということだ。（市川正二）

キャノンボールの、雄雄しい豊かな懐に逃げ込んで抱きしめて欲しいと感じながら、ただただクールでストイックなマイルスに魅かれる。ジャズに恋をするには、この一枚で十分です。「枯れ葉」。。。。衝撃でした。

もう買っちゃった人は仕方ないし、または、よっぽどのマニアで何度も繰り返し同じようなのを買う趣味の人いいけど、日本語解説が不要な一般的な愛好家の方なら、1999年発売のUS盤(RVGエディション)を買ったほうが断然お得！ボーナストラックが1つ加わっています！しかも安価！アルバム名 "something else"で見つかります(本当はsomethin' elseなのですがこれだとUK盤しか出てきません)。決定盤1500シリーズにはこういうのが多いので要注意です。

ちょっとつっぱて、JAZZを齧ろうかなと考えていた時期に初めて、耳にした音がこの一枚です。金管でならす枯葉は、ピアノで聞くときよりも、物悲しく、マイルスのすすり泣くような、ビブラートの枯れた音がまさしく、枯葉でした。随分前となって今では、いろんな音が何でも聞けるのですが・・・。当時は、お気に入りの一枚でした。
