ポリーニが１８歳でショパン・コンクールに優勝した直後、殆ど１０年間演奏活動から身を引いた理由は、彼が自分の音楽性を支え、それを発展させる為の音楽とそれ以外の分野での知識や経験の不足、そして何よりも人間としての未熟さに気が付いたからに他ならない。もしすぐに演奏家としてのキャリアを選んでいたなら、その後は単なるピアノの名手の名に甘んじていただろう。１０年後に彼が楽壇に復帰した時、無味乾燥の機械屋に豹変して聴衆の前に現れたように言う人がいるが、私はそうは思わない。確かに彼の演奏表現は時代と共に変化している。ただそれは彼が日頃暖めている理念を成就させるための試みの結果であり、根本的な演奏スタイルの変化ではないと思う。このＣＤに収められた１９６８年に録音された一連のショパンからもはっきり聴き取れるように、一切の曖昧さを退け音楽を明瞭に造形していく姿勢は、その後も変わっていない。個人的なことだが、私はローマで彼のリサイタルを何度か聴く機会に恵まれた。その時常に感じたことは、彼の演奏には、ともすれば一流のアーティストの間にも横行しがちなご都合主義とは全く縁の無い、頑固なまでの哲学があるということだ。

これは練習曲、前奏曲、ポロネーズでの、聴衆に陶酔する隙を与えない、完璧で、潔癖な演奏ではない。後年に聞かれる独善的な演奏かといえば、そうでもない。ショパンのロマンティックなイメージに則った演奏で、これを聴くと、ショパンが「ピアノの詩人」と称されるのも納得がいく。古典的で難解なショパンは一度も現れない。演奏者の姿もない。鍵盤に託したショパンの感情が次々と心の中を駆け巡っていくだけである。演奏の王道である。
ショパンを聞きたい方に薦める決定盤。

ショパンコンクール優勝した後影を潜めていたころ、出発間近のポリーニの演奏。
20代の頃の数少ない録音です。
