シャルル・ミュンシュが晩年にパリ管弦楽団を指揮して収録したラヴェルの管弦楽曲集のディスク。1968年の収録である。「ボレロ」は非常に遅いテンポだが、途中で加速していくという、聴き手を飲み込むような演奏である。未聴の方はぜひ一度聴いていただきたい。「亡き王女のためのパヴァーヌ」は、パリ音楽院管弦楽団から発展したこのオーケストラの独壇場であり、クリュイタンス盤の演奏に極めて近似した柔らかいホルンの音色が聴き物だ。「スペイン狂詩曲」も陰影の深い独特な演奏であるが、ラストを飾る「ダフニスとクロエ~第2組曲」が凄い。ボストン交響楽団の全曲盤にあるような鋭いエッジの切り口は見られないが、色彩豊かな管弦楽の高揚と、終曲では狂気に近い乱舞が繰り広げられる。組曲の演奏で合唱は加わっていないが、合唱が入っているようなうねり感で圧倒されてしまう。

もちろんボレロもいいのですが、私は最後に入っている亡き王女〜に目から鱗な新鮮な驚きをおぼえました。たいていはセンチメンタルな演奏が多くてそんなものだと思っていましたが、もともとはパヴァーヌ、舞踏曲であってエレジーではないのです。勝手な印象かもしれませんが、悲しみとか絶望とかをやさしく音で包んで空に還してあげている、そんなみずみずしい強さを感じました。

　全く同じメロディを何度も何度も繰り返されるのがボレロ。繰り返されるごとに少しずつ楽器やボリュームが加えられていく、それだけなのに何でこんなに面白い音楽になるんだろう。
　そのボレロの中で名盤と名高いのがこのミュンシュのパリ管弦楽団版です。買い得！ボレロはこれ一枚あれば大丈夫。
