このディスクでの最大の聴き物はヴォーン・ウィリアムズの第6交響曲である。録音時期は古い（世界初演直後）が、音が鮮明なので、鑑賞には全く問題がない。
ストコフスキーと言えば、クラシック音楽の大衆化に貢献した人物として知られ、それだけに、その芸術性については、とかく低く見られがちである。外面的で皮相だとされてしまうのである。確かに、そういう面もあることは否定出来ない。筆者自身、そう思っていた。しかし、ここでのヴォーン・ウィリアムズを聴くならば、ストコフスキーもまた、十九世紀生まれの巨匠であって、その表現力には格別のものがあったと認めなければならなくなるであろう。
悲劇性に溢れ、ドラマティックに開始される、この作品をストコフスキーは緊張力を一貫させながら、進めていく。一つ一つの音が感動と真実に裏づけられている。しかも曲全体をしっかりと把握しているので、聴き手を目の前に繰り広げられる音のドラマに完全に引き込んでしまう。普通の演奏なら、少しばかり退屈させられたり、気が散ったりするヴォーン・ウィリアムズだが、そのようなことは、ここでは全く起こらないのである。
どうか、騙されたと思って、聴いてみて欲しい。これほどの名演を聴かないで済ませるのは、あまりにも惜しいから。
