『Free All Angels』から3年ぶりとなるアッシュの4thアルバム。LAでレコーディングされ、プロデューサーにはNick Raskulinecz（フー・ファイターズほか）、ミキサーにはRich Costley（レイジ、レッチリほか）を起用。全編にわたり「ものすごいリフ」＆アッシュ節炸裂「泣きのキラー・メロ」で埋められ、メロディーの美しさには磨きがかかっている。

   本作が証明していることがひとつあるとすれば、若者はロックする方法を知らないということだ。なにしろ、成長期の大部分を音楽産業にどっぷりつかってきたアッシュは、本作でようやく本物のロック・バンドへと成長を遂げたのだから。これまでのアルバムで学習したパワーポップを捨て、フロントマンのティム・ウィラーを始めとするメンバーたちは、オープニングを飾るタイトル曲のリフを皮切りに全11曲でパワーを全開させている。

   スマッシング・パンプキンズ、とくに『Siamese Dream』を長いあいだ愛聴してきたバンドのサウンドを本作は聴かせてくれる。その影響をうかがわせるのは「Orpheus」「Out of the Blue」といったトラック。けれども賢明なことに、好き勝手にやり過ぎることは避けている――本作が鳴らすのはあくまで楽しんでいるバンドの音であり、そのエネルギーに病みつきになりそうなこともしばしばだ。ときとしてバンドの弱点になるウィラーの歌声でさえ、ギタリストのシャーロット・ハザリーの的確なハーモニーによって引き立っている。だが何よりも最高なのはドラマーのリック・マクマレイだ。前作のレコーディング時よりも腕が2本増えたかのような音を叩きだしている。「Clones」は、マクマレイの激しいビートがなかったら魅力が半減してしまうだろう。本作は文句なしに『1977』以降における最高傑作と言える。なにしろ、この音は再び刺激的になったバンドが繰りだす音なのだから。（Robert Burrow, Amazon.co.uk）

Free All Angelsとは打って変わり、重く悲しい曲が多いです。
特に”Won't be Save”の心に直接訴えかけてくるようなメロディは最高。

序盤はアルバムジャケット(ダサイよ)のように燃え盛る情熱のごとく
重厚な曲が続きますが、後半は叶わない恋を歌った切ない曲がズラリ。
この自然と聴き手を泣かせてくれる流れがイイ！！オススメです。

凄い！これはハード・ロックを通り越してメタルの域に達するサウンドだ。

　前作「フリー・オール・エンジェルズ」で再びイギリス、ナンバーワンに輝いたアッシュ。そのベストを挟んでの最新作、「メルトダウン」とてもつもないハード・サウンド、煌めくギター・リフ、走りまくるベースとドラム。特にドラムが凄い。速い。しかし、今作はティムが希望していたように「よりハードに、より厚いサウンドに」が達成されている。フーファイターなどを手がけるプロデューサーを雇い、まさにフーファイターに負けてない。ぶ圧いサウンドに。しかし、聞く人はそんなに重く感じないだろう。それはティムの幼ささえ感じ、高音のボーカルによって清涼感さえ感じてしまうからである。しかも初回盤はライブ・アルバムもついてくる。これは買いです。

　ちなみにリード・ギターを引いてるのはティム、シャーロット、どっちだと思います？これはティムなんです。そう考えると歌いながら、リードを引くティムの凄さがわかります。

３年ぶりとなる4thアルバム。各所で「ものすごくへヴィになってる」とか書かれていたのでかなりゴリゴリのサウンドを想像してたんだけど、そこまで大きな変化はなくて、初期の荒々しさを前面に打ち出した感じの曲群は増えたものの、今作でも従来通りのAshワールドが展開されている。

これまでの作品では、良くも悪くもライブとアルバムの差があまり無いような感じがあったバンドだが、今作ではアルバムという形でリスナーに”聴かせる”技術が格段にアップしているように思える。これまで以上にコーラスを多用し、エフェクトがかったティムの声や、様々な質感の空気をまといながら唸りをあげるシャーロットのギターが右から左から聴覚を刺激する。長いキャリアをもつだけあって、バンドとしてのアンサンブルもお見事で、緩急や小休止、転調などを上手く使い、抜群に息の合った熱~い掛合いを展開している。

前作の"Sometimes"や"Candy"顔負けの泣きのメロディーが素晴らしいTr.5 "Starcross'd"やTr.10 "Won't Be Saved"を含め良曲が満載だが、個人的なお気に入りはボートラで入っている"Tinseltown"。これ、"Inocent Smile"や"Gabriel"系の長尺ナンバーなんだけど、どんどんどんどん疾走していく感じがむちゃくちゃカッコ良い。ほんとこれ1曲でご飯3杯はイケルって感じで。というわけで今作に関しては国内限定版をお薦めいたします。あ、ジャケに関してはノーコメントということで。笑

ジャケット火からするとめちゃめちゃ激しいのかと思いますが、中身はさわやかです。2曲目のORPHEUSが朝にぴったり。
