傑作ライヴ・アルバム『Live』(1972年リリース)、Donnyの死後に発表された『In Performance』（1980年リリース）から数曲づつ、未発表ライヴ音源を7曲、1973年にNYのWBLS-FMが収録したインタビューを収録したアルバムがついに登場。「Superwoman」、「Yesterday」はそれぞれ、スティーヴィー・ワンダー、ビートルズのカバー。

ダニー・ハサウェイのライヴ盤といえば、1970年代初頭のニュー・ソウル期を飾る名作『ライヴ』（72年）と、そのアウトテイクを中心に彼の死後に編さんされた『イン・パフォーマンス』（80年）の2枚があるけれど、本作はその中からの代表的なナンバーに、未発表音源6曲＋インタヴューを加えたライヴ・アンソロジーだ。圧巻は、73年にNYのカーネギー・ホールで収録された冒頭の3曲。最高傑作『愛と自由を求めて』発売直後（わずか12日後だ）のパフォーマンスで、脂が乗り切っていた時期のダニーの歌と演奏が堪能できる。なかでも、間奏で自ら素晴らしいピアノ・ソロを披露する「Someday We'll All Be Free」は感涙モノ。この日のライヴ音源がまだ他にもあるのなら、なにをおいても聴いてみたい。（木村ユタカ）

ふと、このアルバムが目に入り、即購入。内容としては、前出「Live」「In Performance」と重なる部分もあるけど、それ以外は全部未発表曲。
Donnyの写真って、でかい帽子を被った横顔のやつか、ヒゲ面のやつしか見たことがなかったけど、このアルバムでは丸顔でくりっとした目の彼の正面像を見ることができる。ふうん、と。で、安バーボンをグラスに注いで、早速ＣＤプレイヤーにセットして･･･
…キましたよ。キました。音楽聴いていて、涙を流すのなんて久しぶりだ。別に嫌なことや悲しい事なんて最近はないのに、情緒不安定になってしまった。Donnyの歌声は背筋に電流を走らせ、過去の過ぎ去った諸々の事を一瞬にして思い起こさせ…目に涙を溢れさせる。泣かされちゃいました。
最後に、Donny本人の肉声のinterviewも入っていて、将来の展望などが述べられているが、ちょっと誇大的な所もあり、その後彼が自殺に至ってしまうことを考えると、若々しい声がより痛ましく聴こえてしまう。

彼の「Donny Hathaway Live」を知るファンは歓喜するところだけど、残念。未発表音源は6曲分だけ。あとは、名盤「Donny Hathaway Live」と「In Performance」からの7曲が加えられており、70年代前半の演奏を集めた変則的なライヴ・アルバムとなっている。
　「You've Got A Friend」とか「What's Going On」という名盤「Donny Hathaway Live」からの人気の高い2曲と並べてある、やはり未発表曲は派手さが無いような気があるが、　「Yesterday」など素晴らしく聴かせてくれる、見事だと思う。ボリュームたっぷりの高品質なライヴ･アルバムの登場はファンなら嬉しいと思います。

まさかDonnyの未発表音源が発売されるなんて思ってもみなかった。生きてて良かった。封を開けてビックリ、Donnyが帽子を被っていない写真は初めて見たような気がする。Donnyの5拍子ダブルカウントで始まる1、ウィリー・ウィークスのBassがカッコイイ2、アコピを弾きながら歌い上げる3を聞いたところで既に涙出まくります。既出の4をはさんで、5がまた鳥肌モノです。コレ聞くためだけに買っても損しないと思うな。ビートルズの7も単なるカバーでなく、Donnyのアレンジャーとしての才能が光る出色の出来映え。Donnyの他のアルバム同様に、一生の宝物にしたいと思います。
