76年12月に発表された10枚目のオリジナルアルバムです。76年当時歌手活動をメインに学業生活・ドラマにと目まぐるしく活動していた百恵さんの複雑な心境が伺える作品で1年前に発表された「ささやかな欲望」と比べて見ても大きく飛躍し表現力も豊かになっただけあってこの作品の中では難しい表現力が求められる楽曲をもいとも簡単にこなしてしまう彼女の天性の才能には改めて驚かされます。全体としては大ヒットしたシングル「パ-ルカラ-にゆれて・雨に願いを」「赤い衝撃・走れ風と共に」が目立ちますがアルバム曲自体も曲ごとに違ったスト-リ-展開を持ちマイナ-調の曲が多いにもかかわらず湿っぽくなり過ぎない程度に主人公の微かな心の揺れ動きを表現している様はまるで百恵さん自体が三浦友和さんへの想いを歌に託しているようにも思えます。個人的には友和さんとの運命的な出会いそして素敵な日々を綴ったような内容の「ある1ペ-ジ」佐瀬寿一さんのスピ-ディ-なリズムアレンジをバックにけだるいヴォ-カルが揺れ動く心を見事に表現している「嘆きのサブウェイ」趣のあるサウンドに合わせるかのように「赤い衝撃」の中での2人の運命を表したかのような「君に涙のくちづけを」がお勧めです。

山口百恵といえば「歌謡曲」というイメージが強いのだが、彼女のアルバムには非常にバラエティーに富んだ作品が数多く収録されている。
ここでは彼女のアルバムから、極上のディスコ・ミュージックをピック・アップしたいと思う。

「嘆きのサブウェイ」・・・同時期にファンキー・ビューローを手がけていたアレンジャー船山基紀の作・編曲によるアップ・テンポのディスコ・チューン。
いきなりドラムスとコンガによるブレイクから始まり、ファンキーなシンセ・ベースで幕を開けるイントロ、ドライブ感のある16分打ちのハイハット(特にオープン・ハイハットの使い方は絶妙)、サルソウル・オーケストラ風のストリングス、小刻みのカッティング・ギターやワウ・ギターのアレンジはモロにディスコ・サウンド。そこに彼女の淡々としたボーカルがのり独特のムードを醸し出している。隠れた名曲。

「赤い衝撃」・・ドラマのイメージが強すぎるゆえに見過ごされがちだが、この曲は佐藤寿一作曲のディスコ歌謡の傑作ともいえる作品。
ミディアム・アップテンポの疾走感溢れるディスコ・サウンドに仕上がっており、特に1976年当時のディスコ・サウンドではまだ斬新だったオクターブ・ベースをアレンジに組み込んだ事だけでも凄い。こんな曲をシングル発売出来たのも驚きだ。

「涼やかなひと」・・これも船山基紀の作・編曲によるアップテンポのポップ・ディスコ・チューン。
フィリー・ソウルとAORあたりを混合したような雰囲気を持ったなかなかの作品だ。
