　イタリアを代表するプログレ・バンドの’７２年発表の２nd。
　緩急のついたメロディックな曲を、ツイン・キーボードにより繰り出される、まるで獲物を狙う蛇がはいずりまわるかのような攻撃的な演奏が強烈で、正にアヴァンギャルド。
　そこに挟まれる、ヴォーカリストのオペラのごとく朗々と歌い上げる熱唱は、爽快に聞こえる。

　とにかく全ての面で、ハードでへヴィでパワフル。聴くのに体力がいると言っても過言ではない作風だ。
　しかし、ちゃんと繊細さの同居しているメリハリのついた構成で、決してただ聴きにくいだけの内容にしていないのが、本作が名作と言われる所以である。
　かなり強い刺激が、心地良くも感じられる豪快な内容だ。

イタリアプログレの代表格。バンコで特に好きなのは1st〜3rdの三作、それぞれ違った良さがあり一番は選べないが、無理にでも選べと言われればこの2nd「Darwin！」を推す。1stの作風を更にハードに過激に推し進めた73年作。複雑なアンサンブル、荒々しい攻撃性、アバンギャルド、クラシックの美とロマン、ジャズの小粋さ、オペラ・カンツォーネ風の哀愁あふれる歌など、バンコの様々な要素がどれも極端な形で現れ、過激にぶつかり合う。むき出しの感情。演奏・歌ともに全体を不安げで悲劇的な雰囲気が覆う。
「革命」はクラシカルでロマンチックな美と荒々しい疾走がスリリングに行き交う傑作。序盤はチェンバロ・ピアノ等に乗せ悲哀に満ちた美しい歌声が響いて感動的に盛り上がり、そこからハードに走り出す演奏と熱いがどこか情緒不安定な歌に興奮！キーボードが目まぐるしく駆け巡る展開、混沌、再び熱く走り歌い出す展開を経て後半に現れるピアノ・オルガン等がハモる教会音楽のような旋律はそれまでの展開との強烈な対比ですさまじく感動的。「征服」はダークで勇ましく突進するが、終盤のボーカルはおそろしく物憂げで悲嘆にくれている。胸の空洞を吹きすさぶ風が痛い…聞いてて泣きそうになる。「卑劣漢の踊り」はジャズ風、おしゃれだがうらぶれた空気。腹の底を探り合いながら踊る男と女…そんな雰囲気。「100の手と100の瞳」は唸りをあげて暴走する演奏、力強い歌。クラシカルな旋律や静かな部分もあるが、あわただしい展開の強烈さに全て飲まれてしまう。「75万年前の愛」はピアノに乗せジャコモさんのオペラ風の歌唱が存分に味わえる。悲愴なメロディー、激しく嘆き訴えかけるようなボーカルに圧倒される。「悲惨な物語」は不気味でミステリアスな空間。語りが怪しげ。「疑問」はチェンバロや管楽器など様々な音が緩やかに舞い歌声も踊るようだが、サーカスやお祭りが終わった後のような寂しさ・虚しさがにじむ。素晴らしいエンディング。

典型的なイタリアン・プログレッシブの名盤です。

１曲１曲が適度に長く、思わず嬉しくなってしまいます。
また、どの曲も華麗な展開とインストバトルが繰り広げられて
いて、聴き手を飽きさせません。
７２年のアルバム、といわれても、昨年出されたアルバム、
といわれても違和感の無い出来です。

イタリアン・プログレらしく、ＪＡＺＺフレイバー満載ですが、
それだけではないヘビィかつ壮絶な演奏、構成も楽しめる名盤
ではないでしょうか。
是非聴いてみてください。
