   ブラジルの作曲家／歌手／作家カエターノ・ヴェローゾがこの新たなスタジオ・アルバムで聴かせてくれるのは、古今のアメリカン・ポップ・ソングの再解釈。柔和で、マイルス・デイヴィスにも似た、ポルトガルなまりのヴェローゾのヴォーカルは、英語歌詞にも難なく対処できている。バックを支えるのは、長年ヴェローゾと組んでいるアレンジャー／チェロ奏者のジャック・モレレンバウム率いる28人編成のオーケストラ。パーカッションにカルリーニョス・ブラウン、ギターにヴェローゾの才能豊かな息子モレーノという布陣。そこにかぶさるのが、アフロ・ボサのリズムと、エコーのかかったスペーシーなシンセ／ギターの響きだ。

   ストリングによる伴奏が素晴らしい「Feelings」や、コール・ポーターの「Love For Sale」の大胆なアカペラ・バージョンでは、ヴェローゾはストレートにメロディーをなぞっている。しかし、お楽しみはその後だ。ボブ・ディランの「It's Alright, Ma （I'm Only Bleeding）」をレゲエ風に仕立て直し、「Smoke Gets in Your Eyes」にジャズっぽいサックス・ラインを交え、カート・コバーンの「Come as You Are」をトゥワンギーなスタイルで披露してみせる。スティーヴィー・ワンダーの「If It's Magic」からエルヴィス・プレスリーの「Love Me Tender」、アート・リンゼイのイキな「Detached」に至るまで、ヴェローゾはサウンド破壊の大御所たるゆえんを見せつけている。（Eugene Holley, Jr., Amazon.com）

ブラジルが生んだ天才＝カエターノ・ヴェローゾの最新作。
今回は長く聴き親しまれてきたアメリカン・スタンダーズの数々を「おっ」と驚かされるアレンジで聴かせてくれる。

先ず、所謂「売れ線」だけを狙った単なるスタンダード・ベスト的な選曲で無いところが如何にもカエターノらしい。
ジャズ・スタンダードをはじめ往年の名曲やミュージカル曲、はたまた近年のロック・ティユーンに至るまでその守備範囲は驚異的に広い。
おそらく彼がこれまで様々な意味で意識し、更に影響を受けた音楽大国アメリカの音楽達に違いない。一曲一曲への深い愛情が感じられる。
それらに冒頭で述べた通りに様々なアプローチからアレンジを加え、相変わらずの魅力的な声と達観した歌い方で満喫させてくれる。
個人的には「2.ソー・イン・ラヴ」「9.煙が目にしみる」「10.ダイアナ」「12.カム・アズ・ユー・アー」「16.さらばジャマイカ」「20.サムシング・グッド」「22.ブルー・スカイ」辺りが彼の魅力満載で素晴らしい出来だと思う。
意表を突いたアレンジもまさに彼の独壇場だ。
また独特なラテン訛りの英語も実に魅力的。

私がこよなく愛し、カエターノ自身も尊敬してやまない恩師ジョアン・ジルベルトをある意味で超越した独自の音楽世界が次々と展開されている。
カエターノ・ヴェローゾの多才の極みを改めて思い知らされた一枚だ。

すべて英語のアルバム。違和感は感じません。完成されているものだから、すんなりと耳に入ってくるのでしょうね。一曲一曲、一語一語をとても大切にしているのが感じられるのです。とは言えども、ブラジルの血はこのアルバムにも存分に流れておりますね。

この曲がこうなってしまうの？と様々なJAZZ歌手や奏者に演奏されて聴きなれた曲も、ボサノバ（完全にボサノバにしていないところがまた好き！）アレンジになり、ヴェローゾの真直ぐで優しい歌声とともに新鮮かつ楽しく爽やかに聴けました！
Jazz通なら一度は聴いておいても損はないと思います！
