    1982年の放送以来の人気を誇る「超時空要塞マクロス」シリーズ。多数の続編が製作される中、放送20周年を記念してOVAとして発表された作品が本作品にあたる。これまでの作品が、地球対ゼントラーディの戦争以後を描いてきたのに対し、本作は初めてそれ以前の時代を舞台とした、いわばエピソードゼロである。
   1999年、地球上に落下してきた巨大戦闘艦、後のマクロス。そのため地球にとって早すぎるテクノロジーを巡り統合戦争が勃発し、戦闘に駆り出されたパイロットのシンは南海の孤島に不時着する。そこにははるか昔に異星人がもたらした遺産らしきものがあり、そのため統合軍、反統合軍が島に侵攻しようとしていた。
   CGの発達によって大幅に迫力を増したアクションはもちろん、河森正治、板野一郎といったオリジナルスタッフが作品を手がけているのも見どころだ。（田中 元）

　次巻で完結とあって、マヤの遺跡と鳥の人の謎が一気に膨れ上がります。
このシリーズの売りであるCGも更に進歩し、冒頭でのフォッカーとイワノフとの戦闘は圧巻です。演出も素晴らしい。スピード感溢れる展開です。
　

　が、戦闘シーンは更に少なくっています。その分、シンとサラ、フォッカーとアリアスの恋愛に重点を置いています。単にアクションを望む人は物足りない印象を受けます。しかし「密林」と言うだけあり、朝陽や月光に濡れる木々や動物、水のそよぐ様の描写は見事で、細部に渡って凝った作りとなっています。シンとサラが急接近する様子を自然に美しさが豊かに演出しています。

　この際、アクションではなくラブストーリーとして見てはいかがでしょうか？

１巻~３巻までそんなに人物描写がかかれていなかったのですが
この巻で充分にかかれていたのでシンとサラ、フォッカーとアリエスの
関係がすっきりしました。その分戦闘シーンは少なかったです。
この巻は人によって評価がかなり変わると思いますが
最初のマクロスの展開みたいのが好きな人にはあっていると思います。

この巻でフォッカーがより好きになりました。フォッカーといえば
最初のマクロスでは女に対して時には強引さも必要といっており
見事にゼロでも実行していたのでキャラのつながりが感じられました。
またシンもそれを教わったのか行動的な部分がありニヤリとさせられました。
他にはガンポッドがなくなる描写はこれまでなかったのですが

なくなったとき、運んでくれる機体があったのには驚かされました。
爆弾も反応弾でなく気化爆弾だったのも目新しかったです。
シンやノーラは５巻でのる機体はなんとなく予想はできるのですが
フォッカーが何にのるのかわからない展開となっており、
次の巻も期待してます。

1巻から見てきたが、シリーズ通してやはりしっくり来ない。

時代背景が現代というだけあって妙なリアリティがある(VF-0とヘルメット以外の設定は現代のものに近い)設定。また、VF-0を始めとする変形飛行機。敵がいないと始まらないので反統合勢力。そして、こじつけの様な「鳥の人」伝説。これらが混ざり合うことなく不調和音を奏でている。

本作品の見所は、マクロスシリーズ通して見られる迫力の空中戦が、近年のアニメーション技術によってよりスケールアップしている点。ストーリーや時代背景を全て忘れてその一点に集中すれば、「あ、最新のマクロスシリーズだ」と言うことが思い出せて良いと思う。
まあ、マクロス番外編の一つと思ってみると良いかも。（マクロス７のような）
