ビリー・チャイルズは黒人っぽくない。今時、黒人のジャズ、白人のジャズなんて区別の仕方は陳腐だけれど、６０年代、７０年代初めあたりは、一聴して、黒人、白人とわかったものだが、２０００年にもなると、ほとんど区別がつかない。ビリー・チャイルズはハービー・ハンコックに触発されてジャズピアノを始めたそうだが、そのスタイルは白人、黒人などという区別を乗り越えて、独自のものを持っている。ソフトではあるが、独特の美意識が発露されているのがスティングの名曲「フラジャイル」。何人かのジャズ・ミュージシャンが演奏しているが、極め付きはこのチャイルズのものだろう。チャイルズが敬愛するハンコックの「処女航海」も独自の解釈を見せているが、曲想の美しさ、完成度では、「フラジャイル」が愁眉だろう。この一曲を聴くために、このアルバムを買っても惜しくはない。２０００年の作品だが、その後、アルバムの発売がないのが惜しまれる。（松本敏之）

ビリー･チャイルズのことはあまり知りませんでしたが、収録されている曲に惹かれて買っちゃいました。
ハンコックの曲に対する愛情を感じさせます。「処女航海」や「スピーク･ライク･ア･チャイルド」等のブルー･ノート時代の名曲だけならまだしも、ワーナー時代の『ファット･アルバート･ロウトンダ』から2曲も選曲されているのは、只者ではありません。しかも「テル･ミー･ア･ベッドタイム･ストーリー」と「ジェシカ」です。この2曲はブルー･ノート時代の名曲に匹敵すると個人的には思っています。ハンコック自身による再演も少ない（ないかもしれない）ので、貴重です。特にアルバム･タイトルのネタにもなっている「テル･ミー･ア･ベッドタイム･ストーリー」はハンコックの曲の中でも一番好きかもしれない。
黒人なのに黒人っぽくない（ジャズっぽくない）軽めのフレージンングがジョージ･ウィンストンに似ているなと思ったら、ウィンダムヒルからリーダー･アルバムを出していたんですね。
p.s.私だったら、タイトルは”Speak like CHILDS"にしますね。
