好きなミュージシャンがDUOで競演。
手に入れるのが待ち遠しいと思った久々のアルバムだ。
チャーリー・ヘイデン、ベースの重鎮、DUOの名手。
ジョン・テイラー、冷たく澄んだピアノの詩人。
どんな美しい音楽が紡ぎあげられているのか。
ワクワクしてＣＤをプレイヤーに入れた。

冒頭の「Chairman　Mao」(毛沢東だ)。確か「戦死者たちのバラード」に入っていた曲だが、こんなに美しい曲だったのか。やや陰鬱な「Song for the Whales」(ジェリ・アレン、ポール・モチアンとのトリオでのヴィレッジバンガードライブで演っていた曲)から「Bitter　Sweet」に移ると時の息を飲む美しさ。他のヘイデン、テイラーの曲もいいが、あと２曲あるスタンダードも最高だ。
一聴、深く魅了されてしまった。

一言で評すれば「硬質のリリシズム」。甘いだけの日本制作のピアノトリオとは異なり、酸いも甘いもかみ分けた高いレベルでの音楽的な会話がリリカルに交わされている。フリージャズを経て、さまざまなミュージシャンと競演してきた２人のキャリアが、ここに交錯して美しい音として凝縮している、そんなことを思わせる。

チャーリー・ヘイデンのDUO作品は多いが、私にとってハンプトン・ホウズ(「アズ・ロング・アズ・ゼアーズ・ミュージック」)、パット・メセニー(「ビヤンド・ザ・ミズーリ・スカイ」)とのアルバムに続く名盤の誕生だ。
番外でエグムント・ジスモンチ(「モントリオール・ライブ」)とのものもお気に入りだけど。
