   称賛されたデビュー作に続くアルバムを、過去の栄光を繰り返すことなく、誰にも真似できないスタイルで作るにはどうすればいいか？答えは簡単、コンセプト・アルバムにすればいい。（ザ・ストリーツこと）マイク・スキナーによる本作は、電話で友人としゃべっているかのようなサウンドで、ここ最近の悩みや成功についての物語を語りかけてくる。物語はシンプルだが、その語り口は、単にあらすじを説明するトラックを並べるよりもはるかに一貫性を保っている。

   この物語で重要な役割をになう“壊れたテレビ”は、ガールフレンドのシモンがスキナーに隠れて親友のダンとデートしているという危険信号として、アルバム全体を通じて引用されている。昼メロのように聞こえるかもしれないが、さまざまな工夫で奥行きが加わっているのだ。たとえば、細部にまで気を配った歌詞（「Such a Twat」では「彼女はマクドナルドの駐車場で、白シャツを着た男と一緒にいた」と口ずさんでる）や、リリックの内容に沿った構成のサウンド（「Blinded by the Light」ではハイハットや効果音やピアノの音で、エクスタシーを服用した体験を表現）、心の内をさらけだすあからさまさ（激しい愛を語った美しい叙情詩「I Wouldn't Have it Any Other Way」や心を締めつける別れの歌「Dry Your Eyes」）がそうだ。

   サウンド面について言えば、ブレイクとビートは前作『Original Pirate Material』によく似たスタイルだ――都会的で変則的なドラムのループ、シンセ、クラシック風のストリングス。だがファースト・シングルの「Fit But You Know it」はその例外で、パンクなギターと揺るぎないビートがリリックの内容と同じく、このトラックを疾走させている。本作を巡っていろいろなことが書きたてられるだろう――ここ最近のコンセプト・アルバムの中で傑出しているだけでなく、その語り口の複雑さと生々しい感情の揺れは、リスナーに考えさせる材料をいくつもあたえ、注意深く耳を傾けさせずにはいられないのだ。（David Trueman, Amazon.co.uk）

　例えば、エミネムが“スタン”でやった試みというのは言葉の情報量の多いラップの特性を踏み台にすることで1曲の表現の奥行きを格段に広げることであり、彼はそれをエミネム・ファンとエミネムの手紙のやり取りという極めてコンセプチュアルな形で実現してみせた。ラップによるストーリー・テリングという手法を考え出したのはもちろんエミネムではない。だが、徹底的に構築された楽曲編成にエミネム特有の直接的すぎるリリックがのせられ、衝撃的な結末と共に着地するラップ・ストーリー“スタン”が生まれた時の衝撃というものは、やはり別格だった。ヒップ・ホップがあれほどまでの余韻を残すことが可能な音楽であるということを僕は“スタン”で初めて知ったし、それをポップなフィールドでやってみせたエミネムの上をいくリリシストはいないと今でも信じている。『ザ・マーシャル・マザーズLP』発表当時のエミネムはUSヒップ・ホップの最高到達点であったと同時に、ヒップ・ホップ界の新たな可能性でもあった。
　エミネムが提示した可能性の扉をヒップ・ホップの根がまだまだ弱い英国で開いたのがザ・ストリーツことマイク・スキナーである。このアルバムに描かれた、失った1000ポンドを取り戻すまでのストーリー――アルコール、ドラッグ、友達、恋人、依存、信頼、裏切り、そして、ひとつの終わりとひとつの始まり――。リズムやビートよりも完全にリリックを優先したサウンド理論で語られるそれらのストーリーが後半へ進むにつれて少しずつ集約されていき、ラストにはアルバム・タイトルにも忠実なひとつのコンセプトを完成させる。映画を観終わった時のような大きな感動に聴き手の心が打たれるのは、もうここまでくれば必至と言っても過言ではないだろう。UKグライムのアジテーションとしての役割という意味でも非常に重要な1枚。

ほのぼのとしたツービートにマイク・スキナーのポップなラップが入る、これだけでもすごく好きですが、やはり歌詞。
イギリスの若者のぼやきというか日常会話から、どんどん世界観（というかイギリスの日常）が聴き手の頭に入ってくる。
言ってることはありきたりで当たり前で共感できる。
今までになかった歌詞なので斬新でおもしろい。
家でだらだらしてる時も、都会を歩いている時も、ヒマな時にゆるゆる聴くもよし。
気づけば手放せない一枚になってました。
まず、歌詞が分かることが第一。通常盤も考慮に入れたほうがいいと思います。

色々なアーティストが2004のベストアルバムにあげていたので、買ってみました。今の英国の若者のリアルな生活を表現しているなどがアーティスト達のベストにした理由として書いてありました。実際聴いてみると楽曲はイマイチでした。やはり英国の現状認識と歌詞を理解できないとこの作品は評価できないな~と自分の語学力のなさに寂しくなりました。
