　トム・ウェイツ、エルヴィス・コステロ、リチャード・トンプソンーーこの３人を同じアルバムのゲストに迎えて作品全体が支離滅裂に陥らないバンドは、ロス・ロボスぐらいしかいないだろう。

　フルーム＆ブレイクのもとを離れた前作は、原点回帰的な内容に終始していたが、多彩なゲストと真剣勝負を繰り広げる本作では、再び前衛バンドの本領を発揮。キナ臭くダーティなラテンロックをベースに、ねじ曲がったソウルやカリブサウンドを闇鍋風にブチ込み、スリリングな作品に仕上げて見せた。

　トンプソンを招いた（１０）などは、もはや世界のどこにも比較対象の存在しない完全なロス・ロボスワールドである。カテゴライズできないので「聞いて判断して」としか言いようがない。

　粗野にして繊細、ローカルにしてアバンギャルド、冷徹にして激情的、ケンカっ早いわりに泣き上戸ーー相反する要素が同居する楽曲群は、９０年代ロックの金字塔とされる「キコ」~「ディス・タイム」をも軽く上回っている。年を取るごとに前衛性を強めていく彼らは、やがてダリの境地に達してしまうのか！？

曲といい音といいアレンジといい、とにかく完璧なプロ音楽集団の最新作。過去の作品も優劣付けがたい秀作ぞろいのロス・ロボスだが、曲によってはリトル・フィートだったりスプリングスティーンだったりジミ・ヘンだったりオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドだったりとアメリカン・ロックのエッセンスをあますところなく活用した点が、穿った見方をすればオリジナリティーの源が不明瞭な欠点をもっていた。しかし、本作に限れば完全なるロス・ロボス・ワールドと言ってよし。このグループの本領はツェッペリン的なリズムの安定感とクラプトン的なオトナっぽい落ち着き、それに不思議にも心地よい浮遊感とダンサブル・フレイバーを加味したアルバム作りだろう。この最新作はこの時代ならではのクリアー・デジタル・サウンドで仕上げられているが、そのぶん数少なくなった良質なロック・ミュージックの雄として君臨し続けているわけを説明するに十分な大傑作と評したい。是非ご一聴あれ！必ずや、はまるはずです。

「今、世界で最も優れたロックンロール・バンドの一つ」？いやいや、ロス・ロボスは「今、世界で最も優れたロックンロール・バンド」だと、僕個人は思う。この傑作アルバムもそれを証明している。中でも１、３、６、８といった所は現代ロックの最高峰だろう。どれも素晴らしいグルーヴ持っていて、とても座っては聴いていられない。

随分と腹の出た狼たちではあるが、ニヤリと微笑んでいる口からのぞく牙は鋭い。
