Album Details

One of the most righteous albums of the 21st century so far, and an instant classic we'll be loving for years! Build An Ark are a seriously heavy soul jazz ensemble, with roots and traditions that stretch back to the most righteous days of the 70s underground - the brainchild of producer Carlos Nino and vocalist Dwight Trible - and featuring work by soul jazz stalwarts that include Phil Ranelin, Nate Morgan, Derf Reklaw, Adam Rudolph, and others - all coming together in a fresh, new expression of the righteous ideals that first motivated their original work! Under the guidance of Nino, the group really gels together nicely - working in a loose mode that's a nice change from the tighter cosmic 21st century soul of the European scene - and returning to the organic, almost folksy forms that first emerged on 70s independent labels like Tribe, Strata East, and Nimbus. LA luminary Nate Morgan plays some great Fender Rhodes on many of the album's best tracks - and singer Dwight Trible has a soulful range that's somewhere between the style of Terry Callier and Leon Thomas.

Ammon Contactのカルロスニーニョ率いるスピリチュアルジャズバンドのデビューアルバム。
スピリチュアルジャズに馴染みのない私でも聴けるのは、
カルロス・ニーニョが言う所の「ヒップホップ世代によるジャズ」だから
かもしれません。実際、つんのめり系のドラムもタイトですし、
楽器の絡み具合や音の配置などに、それを感じます。
太鼓ポコポコやハンドクラップも昇天ものです。
Pharoah Sanders 「You've Gotta Have Freedom」を始めとして、
過去の名曲カバーも多くありますし、ベテランミュージシャンの
演奏も最高の一言です。とにかく愛が詰まりまくったアルバムで、
「音楽は素晴らしい」という根本的な歓びが死ぬほど伝わってきますし、
また、こんなのを作れる人間っていいなー的優しい気持ちが溢れてきます....。

随分と以前に入手したのですが、"狙い撃ち的に[1]が聴きたかった"という思いが強すぎたためか、正直、全体を通して聴く機会がそれ程ありませんでした(反省)。最近になって2ndがリリースされた事を知り、久しぶりに(^^;プレーヤーにセットしました。
＃C.ニーニョその人についても、実はよく知りません(^^;
初めて聴いた時の[1]への思い入れはもとより、この集団に参加したM.ホワイト(無論、この人もスピリチュアル・ジャズのコンテキストで語られる要人の一人です)のコンポーズによる諸作にも改めてその良さを感じた次第です。
併せて、N.モーガン(言わずもがなですが、この方も同コンテキストにおける重鎮)の奏でるF-Rhodes、プリミティブが故にスピリチュアルに響くpercなどなど、タイトルが示す通り、どこにでも平安を見つけるが如くの内容です。

クラブジャズ〜Closs Over系と思って購入したのですが、アルバムtotalとして完成度が非常に高かったです。
１枚通して聴くとlove、peace、音楽の素晴らしさを感じられます。スピリュチアルジャズって、、、と二の足を踏まず聴いて欲しいです。
Pharoah Sandersだけでなく、Side Effect『Always There」、Funk.Inc『Let's Make Peace And Stop The War』等、jazz、レアグルーブ〜Free Soulまで幅広い音楽センスを感じます。
