イラク戦争真っ只中の時に作られたアルバム。その環境がアルバムにも影響したみたいです。これまでより更に力強く、女神のように神々しい。寡作で、はずれのないパティのアルバムの中でも最高傑作といっていい充実した内容。ふつうこれだけキャリアがあって年齢をかさねたら丸くなっちゃうもんですが、この人の感性は相変わらずカミソリのように切れています。それでいて年齢を重ねた人だけが持てる円熟味もある。Trespassesなんか、酸いも甘いもかみ締めた人が歌える超美しいバラードです。いやーさすが。カリスマですね。どうでもいいけど、俺が持ってるTrampin'のジャケ、裸足じゃなくてパティの全身が写ってるんですが…なんで？

“GunHo”以来、4年ぶりのアルバム。その4年の間に起きた血なまぐさい出来事・・・９・１１、アフガニスタン、イラク・・・。銃声のやまない世界に向けて放たれたパティの声は、近作になく激しい。時に戦いの女神のように荒々しく、時に息子を戦場へ送る母親のように悲痛で、菩薩のように慈悲深い。

ラジオ・エチオピアの続編とも言える10、ハードなロックナンバーの1や3に挟まれた慈悲深い2、祈りのように捧げられる11・・・そして、ジャケット写真の傷ついた足、裏ジャケットのしおれかけた一輪のひまわりに込められた祈りと鎮魂のメッセージ・・・“Wave”“Dream Of Life”以来の久々の大名盤であることは間違いなし。全ロックファン必聴です。

二、三回聴いただけでは、激しさもありながらも、ただたんにミディアム・テンポの退屈なだけの曲が続く作品に思えました。でも、聞き込むほどに、パティ・スミスは、もはや“パンクの女王”というより“パンクの女神”になった。ぼくはそう感じました。

まず、テーマの根源性・攻撃性。ひとつめは、ブッシュ政権への反発。彼女自身によると、“みんなで団結して、反戦／平和運動のシーンを作り出さなければならない”というメッセージ。ふたつめは、彼女の母の死。“母親の美しさと犠牲へのオマージュ”。（この点、アイテムには歌詞がついていないのが残念です。）

次に、平和や子ども――自分の子にかぎらない人類的な――を失うことへの怒り、平和や子への美しい犠牲を具現化したような、パティの激しいけども慈愛に満ちたロック・ヴォーカル。
そして、パティを支えるバンドの演奏も、ひとつひとつの音が強靭で、いわゆる“音が立って”います。

もちろん、聴いていて楽しくはないのです。でも、現実世界が生み続ける矛盾に対して怒り続けることの大切さ、しかしそれがいつか克服されていくという希望を抱き続けることの大切さ。狭義の（若い）パンクではないものの、誇り高く屹立したパティの詞、曲、ヴォーカル、バンドの演奏から、それらを痛感して、知らず知らずのうちに胸が熱くなる一枚です。
