フェアポート・コンヴェンション脱退後、ソロ作『ヘンリー・ザ・ヒューマン・フライ』を経て発表された、当時の愛妻リンダとのデュオ1st作。（１９７４年）
　どう控えめに見ても、トンプソンの膨大な作品の内五指にはいる傑作アルバム。パフォーマー（ギタリスト、シンガー）としてのトンプソンは今日に至るまで進化（深化）し続けているが、収録された楽曲の粒ぞろいの水準の高さでは本作が頭一つ抜け出ている様に思う。エルヴィス・コステロ、アーロ・ガスリー、マリア・マッキー他多くのシンガーが本作からのナンバーをカヴァーしていることはその証左といえるだろう。
　リマスターされた音質はそれほどの変化を感じさせないが、全体にふくらみが増し、細かなニュアンスが感じられるようになっている。またボーナス・トラックとして、タイトル・ナンバー、「カルヴァリー・クロス」（トンプソンのギターが最高）、バック・オウエンスのカヴァーの３曲がライヴで収録されている。

元フェアポートのリチャードトンプソンが、1stソロに続いて'74年に発表した夫婦デュオとしての初アルバム。全体の印象は決して明るくはないです。（だからこそこのアルバムタイトルなんでしょうか？）詞もこの人らしく、人生の暗い部分に焦点を当てているようです。直接詞の意味が耳に入ってくれば何百倍もこのアルバムの良さがわかるんだろうなあと悔しく思います。しかし曲と演奏だけでも、このアルバムの良さは充分に伝わってきます。やはりリチャードの自国トラッドを消化した、英国人らしいメロディ作りと、バックのどっしりとした演奏が最高です。全編、ミディアムかスローで、寸分のくるいもない安定したリズム隊に、あのリチャード独特のこれもトラッドを消化したギターが乗っかると、あのフェアポートの名作「フルハウス」にも通じるような緊張感が漂います。フェアポートを通じて学んだトラッドを見事にエレクトリックギターに取り込み、1stソロ「ヘンリーザヒューマンフライ」で自分の世界を確立した彼ですが、続くこのアルバムでさらに深みを増したように思います。捨て曲なしの完璧なアルバムだと思います。夫婦デュオ時代では間違いなくこれが最高傑作でしょう！！！！
