後期のピチカート・ファイヴ特有の極彩色のポップさはないものの、８０年代の日本で作られた音楽とは到底思えないほどのオシャレな音楽。よく聴くと既に後年開花するハイセンスな響きの土台は既に出来上がっているし、初代ボーカルの佐々木麻美子のアンニュイな声にしか醸し出せないしっとりとした雰囲気が素敵だ。

どの曲も粒ぞろいに魅力的だが、とりわけ後年アルバム「Pizzicato five」でセルフカバーされた「連載小説」はやはり凄い。個人的には野宮真貴のクールで色っぽい「連載小説」も好きだけれど、どうしようもなく切なくなってしまうのは佐々木麻美子の「連載小説」の方だ。それにしても、「嫌いになるほどあなたが好きなの」という強烈なフレーズをファーストアルバムにして書いた小西康陽は何という偉大な男なのであろうか。

最近テイチク時代のデビューシングル『オードリーヘップバーンコンプレックス』の幻的なPVをとある動画サイトで初めて見ました。
そこで思ったのが、小西氏ほど映画にインスパイアされたミュージシャンはなかなかいないなぁ、ということでして。スパイ映画やヒッチコックのように『覗き』の視点が随所に散りばめられたエディット感覚。
カップルズもそんな感じ。しかしポップスへの真摯な姿勢もより色を強めている上に、前作とはうって変わってテクノポップな音は一切鳴りを潜め、スタンダードなポップスになっています。
バカラックやロジャーニコルス、ニールヘフティなどのアメリカンポップスへの愛情、知識を炸裂させまくってるのは、他の方々も評しているところですが、一番の特徴は何と言ってもフィルスペクター張りに強烈なエコーが効いたミックスでしょう。アンビエントというか聴き様によってはブライアンイーノが手がけたのか？と思ってしまうくらいの残響音バリバリなのです。これをどう捉えるか？好き嫌いはそれぞれあると思いますが、これはこれとしてすんなりと聴けてしまう不思議なアルバムです。
しかし、本当にいいものというのは確実に時代を超えてしまうんだなぁ、とピチカートの初期を聴く度に思ってしまうです。

　歌詞は失恋っぽいが、曲調は明るくて軽快。失恋した時や、気分が落ち込んでいる時に聴くと、心にあたたかい光が差し込む感じがします。ファーストアルバムとは思えないほど良い。初代ボーカルの佐々木さんの声もかわいい。
