ジャニスに関しての評価は大きく分かれるのですが、分けてもこのアルバムに関する評価は人により大きく違ってくるのではないかと思います。私自身の評価としては、このアルバムが彼女のアルバムの中で一番彼女らしさを感じさせるという点で最も高く評価しています。アルバムタイトルにあるようにまさしく「愛の翳り」を感じさせる曲がならび、何度聞いても感動します。そして、このアルバムを初めて聴いたときの自分の心のありようを思い出し懐かしさでいっぱいにしてくれます。このアルバムがあまり高く日本では評価されない点が残念はありますが、一方、人気がでていたるところで流されてあまりにも一般化してしまうことから逃れていてくれて嬉しいという気持ちもあります。自分の大事なもの、という気分にさせてくれる素敵なアルバムです。

前作「奇跡の街」ではロック色の強い都会派のサウンドだったが、
これはどちらかと言うとアンプラグドでジャズに近いサウンドで、
スタジオライブ的にこじんまりまとめた音作りのアルバム。
重ね撮りした感じがなく、デモテープを聴いているかのような響きがする。

私のお気に入りは「イリュージョン」「一夜だけのホテル」「わるい癖ね」
「街角の吟遊詩人」「ホッパー・ペインティング」の５曲。
「イリュージョン」は感情のほとばしりを極力抑えて、しっとりと歌う名曲。
懐かしむ昔が少し悲しい。
「一夜だけのホテル」「街角の吟遊詩人」は、
いずれもジャニスのピアノ弾き語りが冴える曲。
リズム感も鋭いし、それに乗せて歌う歌も大変そう。
しかしその分伝わってくるものも多い。
「わるい癖ね」は本当にジャズっぽい歌。力の入らない素敵な曲。
ピアノ１本で歌い通す「ホッパー・ペインティング」は
哲学的な内容と高度な作曲の技術が魅力。
歌唱もジャニス節炸裂で、本当に感動的。
ポップな「愛のきずな」もそれなりにいいし、
まるでお化けがでてきそうな「ドゥ・ユー・ウォナ・ダンス」も、
大人っぽい雰囲気がいい。
「ひとり暮らし」はジャニスの歌唱力が光るが、
少し気張りすぎている感じがあって残念。

少しマニア向きの内容かも知れない。
