クオリティが低い音楽が流れているわけではないし、ちょっとオリエンタルな音作りは聴いていて苦痛ではありません。でも、ロックとしてはこれといって盛り上がることもなく終わってしまい、リスナーは、いい言い方をすると、穏やかな幸福感、悪い言い方をすると、けだるい不完全燃焼感に満たされます。要は、アラニスが巧みな大人のシンガーになったと受け取るか、あるいは若さ、激しさを失い、無難にまとめるだけのシンガーになったと受け取るか、リスナーによって分かれるでしょう。
ぼくの考えでは、このアルバムのおとなしめの音楽は、過去のアルバムからのアラニスの変化について賛否両論織り交ぜながら思いをめぐらすことのできる古参のファンとちがって、彼女の以前の激しい音楽にまったく思い入れのない新規のリスナーにとってはインパクトに欠けるものになるはずです。あくまで、次のアルバムでの大変化を前にした過渡期のアルバムであってほしいですね。
90年代に一時代を築いた女性シンガー／ソングライターの新作としては物足りなさは残ります。でも、かといって、根本的にアラニス以上にクリエイティヴなことができないのにCDが売れているアラニスの後輩格の女性ロック・シンガー（？）たちのアルバムを聴く気はしないので、彼女たちへの批判を込めて、星四つにしておきます。

今回のSo-Called Chaosには、やられました。
CDの収録時間フルに曲を詰込んだ新譜が多いなか、このAlanisの新譜は僅か10曲、40分強しかありません。しかし冒頭で書いたように、1曲目のEight Easy StepsからAlanisの新しい面が全開です。この様なタイプの曲は今までになかったのではないでしょうか？何かふっきれた様な印象すら受けました。
以降は、アコースティックな面を活かした曲が多いですが、時おりエスニック調なスパイスが曲のなかに散りばめられていて、Chaosというタイトルが示すように良い意味での混沌とした様子が、この新作に感じられました。

今回の作品は前回までの作品に比べて毒が抜けたって感じ。ピュアなイメージです。髪を切ったからかな？でも相変わらず怒涛のライムがいいスパイスになって効いてます。でも悲しいのはどこのｃｄショップに行ってもアラニスよりアヴリル一色なこと。アラニスのよさももっとアピールしてほしい！！
