彼女自身が手がけるギター、ピアノ、キーボードなどの他は
クリスティーナ・ファイルズのドラムスのみ。
必要最低限の編成で、驚異的な完成度の作品に仕上った。

歪みまくるファズギターといい、
ジャズっぽいピアノといい、
彼女独自の美学に貫かれていて
表現力豊かな歌とともに
オルタナティブなロック表現者としての実力を
遺憾なく発揮。

重く、ざらついた質感の音像のなか、
歌がくっきりと浮かび上がり、
時にリリカルに、かつ激しく、揺さぶられる。

全面的に制作に関わったというスティーブ・アルビニの
サポートに徹した仕事ぶりも見事だ。

イージーリスニング的に軽く聴ける作品ではないが、
鳥肌ものの通算4作目、傑作です。

スティーブ・アルビニ録音。ザクッザクッというギターの硬質な感触。すでに言われているように、P.J.ハーヴェイに近い。が、明確なアイデンティティは打ち出されている。大まかに言えば、♯5・6はピアノをバックにしたバラード、他は神経質に拍子を繰り返す金属質のヒリヒリしたブルース・ロック。アルバム・タイトルの取られた♯5 "throw a blanket over the sun" で連呼されるno love is here…というフレーズが印象的。驚異的な生々しさのヴォーカルをはじめ、ギターも、ドラムも、ピアノも、何もかもが美しく鳴っている。

アトランタ在住のＳＳＷ、シャノン・ライトの４thアルバム。
スティーブ・アルビニの秘蔵っ娘と言われているらしいが、
このアルバムを聴けば「さもありなん」と素直に思える。

ギター・ドラム・ピアノを中心にアルビニの原音主義も相俟って
ミニマルなオルタナ的な質感ながら、逆にシャノン・ライトのヴォ
ーカルと楽曲の存在感を際立たせています。
歌詞も含め、日常生活というより、どこか詞的な世界観を感じさせ
ますが、非常にエモーショナルでありながら、どこか乾いた諦観・憂
いを湛えており、聴き込むと何か心に澱が残る感じです。
前作の”Dyed in the Wool”と比較すると、ヴォーカルの抑制と質
感、全ての面で上回っていると思う。

P.Jハーヴェイの”UH HUH HER”とほぼ同時期に発売され、私個人も
ほぼ同時期に購入しこの二枚を熟聴していたのですが、どちらも説明し
難いやるせなさを感じさせる点で共通していると個人的には思っており
ます。

P.Jハーヴェイ、特に上記の新譜、或いはフィオナ・アップルが好きな
方、或いはネットで”ヤーヤーヤーズ”を検索した事がある方などは是
非一度聴いてみて下さい。
