　例えば、リトル＝ウオーターとか日本ではマイナーなブルースを最近聞くようになった。齢５０年も重ねてくると、いつまでもBeatlesやStonesでは間が持たなくなってきた。といって最近の新譜を理解するのも年のせいか困難だ。　
　それで、最近、古い時代に戻っている。
　クラプトンの根源はブルースにあるのだから、メジャーなロバート＝ジョンソンだけでなく、マイナーなブルースマンも聞き込んでいたと思う。
　・・・で「お前に何がわかる？」といわれるのを承知で書くと、クラプトンは、いまやブルースのギタリストではない、彼自身の独特な世界に至ってしまったと思う。
　ロバート＝ジョンソンのカバーというよりも、彼の曲を借りてクラプトンの世界を演出しているだけではないのだろうか？

以前のブルースカバー作品「From The Cradle」に比べると雲泥の差です。ロバート・ジョンソンのカバーに真摯に取り組んだというより、セッションを楽しんだという印象。何よりリズム隊の軽さが致命的です。イントロのギターだけそれっぽく弾いて、あとはダルなリズムに乗せて、適当に演奏しているという感じ。クラプトンがこの時期にロバート・ジョンソンをカバーするのだから、何らかの成果があるのではと期待した私は大いに裏切られた気分です。上述のアルバムでの、刹那的な演奏や深みのあるボーカルはここには全くありません。結果的にいうとロバート・ジョンソンの凄さだけが、際立ってしまったように思います。

バンド・サウンドの為、ロバート・ジョンソンと言うより、マディ・ウォーターズに近いか？
期待外れの1枚。
ジャケットに騙されないように。
