さすがのライノ製作、ただのベストではありません。全曲にわたりリマスターされ各楽器の分離が良くなっています。またコーラスの聴き分けも判り易くなっていて、特にヴォーカルが生々しいです。初期の作品での特徴であるあの瑞々しい（青臭い？）彼の声が素晴らしいです。裏を返せばごまかしの効かない稚拙なヴォーカルが丸見えになっていますが、これがまた初々しくて良いです。

１枚目を聴いた限りでは8は別バージョンかと思うくらいの仕上がりだし、11はフェードアウトがちょっぴり長く聴こえています。12でのスライドギターは故Ｌ・ジョージの指使いが見えてきそうです。それになんと言っても１枚目のハイライトは15のD・リンドレーのラップスティールの導入部ですね、これは本当リアルな響きでゾクゾクしてしまいます。まるでリンドレーが目の前に居るかのようです。
結果的にこれら一連のリマスターは成功だと思いますので、旧作品もボーナストラック付きで是非とも再発表して欲しいです。

「誠実」といえば、これほど誠実なミュージシャンも希だと思える、「ジャクソン・ブラウン」。
陽気なウエストコースト・ミュージシャン達の中にあって、彼の歌詞は徹底的に内省的で
あり、時にペシミスティックでありながらも、その姿勢は常に力強く前向きだ。
反原発運動（ノー・ニュークス）やホームレス支援運動、そして、昨年のアメリカによる

イラク戦争に対する反戦活動。社会現象と決して切れない自分を維持し続ける、希有な
ミュージシャンだと思う。彼の詩は内省的だが、彼の目は常に外部に向かって開かれている。
臆することなく時代に立ち向かう彼の姿に感動を憶える。音楽家は音楽だけを
作っていたらいい、と堂々と発言する日本のミュージシャン達はいったい何だろう？

と思ってしまう。ジョン・レノンはこう言った。「芸術家の仕事はものごとの価値を転換
することだ」と。今回のベストは、既発一枚ものベストに収録されなかった名曲が、
２枚組という大きな枠の中で見事に甦った、と私は感じている。ファンなら既に出ている
あの一枚ものベストに、穴だらけのジャクソン・ブラウンの写真を見せられたような

空虚感を感じた事だろう。そう言う意味で、本当のベストはこの二枚組で（もちろん
物足りなさは隠せないが）ようやく実現されたと言うことが出来る。
今回収録された、初期の「Jamaica Say You Will」「Take It Easy」は、ファン
なら絶対に外すことが出来ない名曲だし、「Before the Deluge」「For a Dancer」
「Here Come Those Tears Again」といった優れた佳曲も見逃すことは出来ないはずだ。
今回のベストはライノ・レコードの製作によるものだが、ライノならではの気の利いた
選曲だと言えるだろう。また、ＷＥＡのものに比べて、マスタリングを含めて更に
音質の向上も図られているはずで、さすがはライノはファン心理をくすぐる企画を
立てている。

ただ、あの大傑作「Fuse」が収められていないのは残念といえば残念だ。私は歴史
に残る名曲だと信じているのだが。しかし、あの曲の入ったアルバム「Pretender」は
絶対にアルバム全部を聴いた方が良いと思うので、ようやく納得。そうか、そこまで
考えていたのか・・・？ライノ恐るべし。

完全なベストには、２枚のＣＤでも足りません。ＬＰの時代からＪＢを聞き始め、ＣＤ時代に入ってからはＣＤを買い揃えました。なので、ベストを買う必要もないと言えばないのですが・・・。今回このＣＤを買ったのは、Rhinoによるデジタル・リマスター版だったからです。今後オリジナル・アルバムも次々とリマスター版が（ボーナストラックつきで）発売されると思うのですが、それまで待ちきれなかったのです。そんな訳で、古い曲が多いのは大歓迎でした。このアルバムは、輸入盤のcompilationには珍しく歌詞が付いています。さすがＪＢ！
ところで、購入を検討中の方に２つばかり注意点があります。１つめは収録曲についてです。曲目リストには"That girl could sing"が記載されていますが、大変残念なことに、実際には収録されていませんでした。その代わり（？）"Lawyers in Love"が入っています（買う前は入っていないのが不思議でした）。そして、曲目リストとは若干曲順も違っています。２つめは取り扱いについて。このアルバムは紙ジャケットですが、ディスクの保定が不十分な構造であるため、ディスクが外れやすいのです。平らな状態で取り扱うことをおすすめします。
私も"HOLD OUT"からの曲が少ない点には納得がいきません。"For America"も入れて欲しかったですが、Sep.11以降のアメリカの国民感情を考慮すれば、"I Am A Patriot"に差し替えでやむを得ないのかもしれません。ということで、以上を総合して４つ星にしました。
