   ザ・バンドの復帰作として名高い1975年リリースの今作は、『Stage Flight』や『Moondog Matinee』、そしてロビー・ロバートソン脱退後の作品同様色あせることがない。全8曲（2001年の再発でうれしいことに、「Twilight」と「Christmas Must Be Tonight」の別ヴァージョンが追加された）バンドの魅力たっぷりで、特にリック・ダンコが重たいムードを醸し出す破壊的な「It Makes No Difference」が良い。ロバートソンのプレイが光る「Forbidden Fruit」「Ophelia」を除けば、やや強引とも思える「Jupiter Hollow」「Rags and Bones」あたりか。ガース・ハドソンはいつも最新の機材を揃えてスタジオ入りしていたが、ARPやミニムーグの分厚いサウンドがせわしない雰囲気を出している。『Northern Lights -- Southern Cross』は典型的な70年代の作品。いつの時代が全盛期だったか意見の分かれる5人組にとっては意外な作品。(Steven Stolder, Amazon.com)

本作は、ザ・バンドの諸作品の中で、私が最も好きな、そして最高傑作といってよい作品です。メンバーが焚き火を囲むアルバム・ジャケットに趣があり、収められた曲がどれも魅力に満ちています。本作は（４）や（６）等心に響く佳曲が多く、特に映画ラスト・ワルツでもフィーチャーされていた、情感溢れる（６）は、ロビー・ロバートソンのギター・ソロ等の実に素晴しい演奏はもちろん、故リック・ダンコの歌が古今の絶唱の一つに数え上げても過言ではない見事な出来です。この超名曲のために本作を購入しても損はしない、珠玉の１枚と言ってよいでしょう。

初期２枚に比べても遜色ない傑作アルバム。
ジャケットもかっこよく曲もよく言うことなしです。
すべてRobbie Robertsonの作品で、彼らにしてはめずらしく担当楽器が
すべて内袋に印刷されています。（これもちゃんと再現されています）
個人的にはオープニングをかっこよく飾る1、哀愁ただようRickの6、
大作4あたりがお勧め。ボーナスはオリジナルアルバム自体の完成度を
考えるとうれしいような、そうでないような複雑な気持ち。
ジャケットはもともとなんのギミックもない普通のシングルジャケット
なので紙ジャケになっても感動は今ひとつ。
内容で勝負。これは買って聞いても絶対に損はないと断言できます。

今の耳で聴くと
古き良き時代の
いくぶんカントリーの香りも感じる

人のぬくもりがある、アメリカン・ロック



それでいて

何かを悟りきってしまったような
さばさばとした感じ

それと
神懸ったような
研ぎ澄まされた演奏


ラスト曲「おんぼろ人生」の不思議な安らぎと
穏やかな高揚感、、、


名盤は、

相反する要素ですら
飲み込んでしまうものなんだなあと思いました。
