   本作『Music from Big Pink』はロック界を根本から変えた、たぐいまれな1枚として際立った存在感を放っている。サイケデリック革命真っ盛りの1968年にレコーディングされた本作だが、ザ・バンド（およびプロデューサー兼サイドマンのジョン・サイモン）は現実離れしたビジョンを追い求めたりせず、アーシーな方向性を選んだ。というわけで、ワウ・ワウ・ペダルやテープ・ループは影を潜め、フィドルやマンドリンが前面に出てくる。

   ロビー・ロバートソン、ベーシストのリック・ダンコ、ピアニストのリチャード・マニュエルが全11曲を提供したこのデビュー・アルバムは、メンバー間の対等さがもっとも発揮された作品と言えそうだ（その後すぐに、ロビー・ロバートソンがグループのスポークスマンとして頭角を現すことになったが）。中でもマニュエルは2曲でヴォーカルを担当する他、物悲しいオープニング曲「Tears of Rage」をボブ・ディランと共作している。本作以降、マニュエルの役割は減っていき、メンバー5人の間で保たれていたバランスは崩れることになった。ザ・バンドの最高傑作としては、本作の続編と言うべきアルバム『The Band』を挙げる声が多い。だが実は、本作こそザ・バンドの真髄であり、その出来ばえは卓越している。

   リマスター・リイシュー盤には、ボーナスとして9トラックが追加された。ロバートソンによるレア・トラック「Ferdinand the Imposter」やスタンレー・ブラザーズのカバー「If I Lose」など、聴きどころ満載だ。（Steven Stolder, Amazon.com）

ボブ・ディランの手によるイラストのジャケットが素晴しいザ・バンドのデビュー作。もともとカナダのロックンロール歌手のバックバンドだった彼らが、その後ディランとの交流を深め彼のバックバンドとなり、そして遂に一本立ちした記念すべき作品がこれである。
ブルース、カントリー、Ｒ＆Ｂそしてゴスペルといったアメリカのルーツ・ミュージックに深い知識と愛情を持っていた点が、ディランと共鳴した部分であるものと思う。そしてこの作品もそういったアメリカ南部のルーツ・ミュージックを土壌にした、非常に味わい深い、奥の深い作品に仕上がっている。当時彼らはまだ20代だったはずだが、“ゆるさの美学”とも言うべき独特のタイム感覚とルーズさがとても良い。ワカゾーには理解出来ない世界かな。
このアルバムには故郷を探し求める「よそ者」が登場する。
これはまさに彼らザ・バンド自身の姿を投影しているわけだが、同時にそれがアメリカの多くの若者から支持を得た部分でもあった。
「ザ・ウェイト」「アイ・シャル・ビー・リリースト」の2曲は涙モンの名曲！

発売当初はどう受け取られたか今となってはよくわからないが、今は神々しい
までに光り輝いた神の領域にあるといってもいいくらいの傑作アルバム。
彼らは見てくれがじじむさいので、発売当初もかなり年とって見えていたが
実際は２０代でこのアルバムを造ったのだ。
これを奇跡と言わずして何と言おう。
どうして若いみそらで1のような娘と親父の悲しい対立が歌えるのか。
7や9のような悲しい歌が歌えるのか。10や11のような名曲が歌えるのか。
自分が年を重ねれば重ねるほどこのアルバムのよさはわかってくる。
中身だけをじっくり聞いて欲しい。
そうすれば、紙ジャケやボーナストラックは本当にどうでもよいとわかるはずだ。
（いや、あった方がうれしいですよ。無くても価値は変わらないという意味ね）
