   シカゴ生まれの音の錬金術師トータスの5作目は、ジャズ、ダブ、プログレッシヴ・ロックの王国を通して、1996年の比類なき前作『Millions Now Living Will Never Die』以来となるすばらしい旅に戻ってきた。たしかにトータスはスタジオの実験と音楽理論というばかげた両極に、今もなおなみなみならぬ関心を寄せている。逆に前作からの時の流れを感じさせるのは、学術的なひたむきさや、チャイムを鳴らすヴィヴラフォンの軽快な動きと容赦なく融合された無機質なノートパソコンの機械音、ダビーなライヴのリズムだ。そしてジョン・マッケンタイアのプロダクションはこれまでどおり滑らかで工夫に富んでいる。

ジョン・マッケンタイアをはじめ、メンバーのそれぞれが、
さまざまなセッション・プロジェクトで活躍する
凄腕ミュージシャンのユニットなのに
この自然体のサウンド作りは、どうだ！

テクニックに走りすぎず、
生音を生かしたシンプルな音作りに徹している。
さらりとデリケートに、聴くほどにディープ。
聞き応えのある深みのあるサウンド。

It's all around youのタイトル通り
まわりのすべてに愛情をそそぐ
純粋に音楽を愛する気持ちが伝わってくる傑作。

そろそろシカゴ音響派などという冠は
必要ないのではと思えてくる。

あるサイトに、このアルバムについて「いつもの彼らのアルバムのように、１曲目は最高に興奮させてくれるけれど、あとは聞く価値なし」と評していて、言い得て妙というか率直に言ってくれたなと思いました。
初めてこのアルバムの１曲目を視聴したときは涙腺が緩むほど感動したんだけれど、アルバムトータルとしては個人的には印象が薄いといわざるを得ません。
たとえばトータスと同じように音響に並々ならぬこだわりを持っていたピンクフロイドの「狂気」なんかは、一度再生させると最後まで感動を持続しながら聴けるのですが、トータスのアルバムはしばしば途中で止めてしまいます。まぁ、トータスとしてはピンクフロイドとか、その他数多くのロックバンドが持っていた物語性重視のスタンスを拒否して、純粋に音響だけに拘りたいのだろうけれど、もうすこし緩いリスナーにも配慮して、アルバムの中で１曲目のような曲を増やしてほしい。音響派の寵児であると同時に、情動に訴えるメロディーをつくれることもトータスの強みだと思うから。

　Bass6を弾くダグ・マッカムのせいだろうか。
刑事モノのドラマのテーマソングのようなメロディーが全体を通して、やけに耳につく。

　＃1、＃7、＃10しかり、「特攻野郎Ａチーム」や、一昔前のアメリカのテレビドラマのヒーローシリーズ物を思わせる。ひょっとしたらトータス、時代劇かなんかに登場してもイケるのではなかろうか。ファンとしては、そんな妄想を抱いてしまうほどの大スペクタクル。映画音楽に使われてもおかしくない、エンニオ・モリコーネばりの作曲センスも持ち合わせたアルバムだ。

　ジェフ・パーカーのジャズアレンジはもちろん、ジョン・マッケンタイアの音作りも素晴らしい！！彼は、センス抜群のドラマーでありながら、文字通り「音の魔術師」である。
この固定メンツで、この先もたくさんの良いアルバムを届けてくれることを祈ります。
とにかく極上のアルバム。

今までの作品とはまた異なる音。でも一発で彼等のものと分かるワンアンドオンリーな音。じっくり聞き込めるアルバム。ただしジャケがなあ。。
