ロンドン版と言われる２台のピアノ伴奏による『ドイツ・レクイエム』。オーケストラ版を書いた後で、ブラームス自身によって作られたものである。静謐な鎮魂の情感が漂う点では、オケ版とは違う作品であり、もっと聴かれてよい。
オケ版のディスクにあまりよい演奏がないだけに、あれこれと探して聴いてみるが、注意深く耳をすませていると意外な発見もある。第６曲も含めて、現代ピアノのスケールの大きな伴奏により、物足りなさはあまりない。その点では、大いに物足りない古楽器オケの小編成のものよりもよい。第３曲の終結にいたる持続的なニ長調の行進は、テンポ、表現ともまずまずであり、大抵ガッカリさせられる通常のオケ版のものよりは満足した。最近では、ラトル盤には本当にガッカリさせられたなあ・・・。
