タイトルと演奏者名を見て、ビル・エヴァンスの名盤『ホワッツ・ニュー』を想起するジャズ・ファンは多いはずだ。フルート奏者J.ステイグの存在が一躍知られることになったのには、この『ホワッツ~』での彼のプレイが印象的だったからだ。その名盤の感慨を呼び戻そうと企画された録音。当時のメンバーだったゴメスの他にはマイルス・バンドでの活躍で知られるジミー・コブにも注目。ステイグの独特のタンギングから生まれる鋭いパッセージと個性豊かなフルート奏法が健在なのが嬉しい。ステファン・カールソンのピアノも好演。 (上村敏晃) --- 2004年04月号
